Media Disconnected

Hi guys,

I'm baffeled. I've googled etc and cannot find a satisfactory answer. I see that other people have the same problem when setting up networks etc but nothing similar to the same sitch as mine -

My NTL 2 meg connection has been running like a dream since I moved house.
The other day I removed the ethernet cable from the back of my PC. I had not shut down the PC or the modem before removing the cable. I have done this many times and plugging it back in results in the connection slowly coming back.

This time after I removed it, and I had not even plugged it into anything else, I plugged it back in and nothing.....

IPConfig reports "Media disconnected". The Terayon cable modem I have shows the Power, Cable and PC LED's. When I boot up the PC the data LED blinks once then stops.

I'm stumped. Any ideas?!

Re: Media Disconnected

Power down the PC, then the modem with the cable plugged in.
Turn the PC on, then when it's sitting at the desktop turn the modem on.

Re: Media Disconnected

Tried it. If the modem isn't powered up before I boot the PC the PC LED doesn't light.

If I power up the modem when the PC has already booted nothing happens. PC LED remains dead and sometimes I get a "Network Cable Disconnected".

Re: Media Disconnected

you might have bent the pins in your network ethernet adapters so they are not making contact.

Try 'carefully' and whilst powered down taking a pin and lifting them a bit. This may help.

Re: Media Disconnected

will give it a bash - I'm thinking it's more of a software issue rather than hardware. Think XP just decided not to bother anymore!

Re: Media Disconnected

Got any friends with a laptop to eliminate either the cable or PC?

If Xp reports 'media disconnected' it shows the NIC is not disabled by XP - it means that it cannot detect a link - ie dodgy cable or dodgy NIC (or dodgy CM).
