Multiple IP Addresses

Hello,

I was wondering if there is any way to get more than 1 IP address with NTL Broadband. I have been having some problems when trying to play a game from 2 computers on my LAN on the same server as other WAN computers. I belive this problem is because we are on the same EXTERNAL IP address and was wondering if it is possible for NTL to give 2 IP addresses or would I have to signup for another connection?

get the ps2 / xbox gaming service at £5/month , then you will have 2 i.p. addresses , gonna work out expensive over a year though

It's £2 a month, and has been for about a year now....

I have a feeling you just need to change the game port on one of the machines, they wont be able to both authenticate with a CD key, or game service provider server otherwise. Look in one of the games INI config files and look under port

Yes, I think this may be around it, but the game, Age of Empires 2, doesn't seem to provide a facility to change this?

It is strange that it works on two different computers joined by a crossover cable then connected to the internet but not if using a router. Would there be an explaination for this?

Im not familiar with this game, i play ravenshield, battlefield vietnam, and a couple of others. it might have somthing to do with ports on the router, try setting a DMZ, or open the appropriate ports

Yes, the game only runs on one port. I have set one computer to DMZ and to another I have forwarded the port. Both computers can play the game online now but it seems to screw up if they are on the same server.

hmmm that is strange, maybe there is just a bug in the game itself, im not sure about it, look it up. I hope i have been of some help

Yea I have looked up several things on the microsoft site, although, I can't seem to find any mention of issues .. It just doesn't make sense to be that it works using a crossover cable when it will still be the exact same 2 systems on the same IP and port.

If you are connecting 2 machines using Crossover cables and (presumably) Internet Connection Sharing, then they would have two different IPs.

No, he means u would have 2 different internal LAN IP adresses..... which is pretty obvious! u will still get one WAN (NTL) ip

Yes I know that ... but this is an issue over WAN not LAN .. It's to do with 2 of my LAN computers trying to play with other WAN computers.

It doesn't work with my current setup but I played a game against a friend and his two computers are joined by crossover cable. I am wondering why it doesn't work through a router like this?

No, in the case of 2 machines connected together, whether using crossover cable and Internet Connection Sharing or a router, then ICS or the router would use the NTL IP to communicate with the outside world, but would assign individual IPs to the PCs attached to it.

For example your NTL IP is 81.99.xx.xx, and you have two PCs running off it, one attached via the other which is running Internet Connection sharing. ICS would assign SEPERATE IPs for internal use. PC1 would be 192.168.0.1 and PC2 would be 192.168.0.2.

If you use the Internet (email, web, ftp etc) on PC2, then PC2 will send the request to PC1, which will then send the request to NTL as if the user on PC1 had made it. When NTL send the reply back, they send it to PC1, PC1 will resend it to PC2. A router operates in much the same way as ICS. This process is called "Network Address Translation" (NAT).

The point is that if you play a game purely on those PCs (without attaching to an external game), then each PC will have it's own IP. If you play the game on those PCs using an external server, then due to NAT, both PCs will be using the same IP, thus confusing the server.
