tv through broadband

If is is possible what channels can you get

If you have a tv card yes, another way is through a grathics card linked to your tv, i suppose a more tech minded member will be along soon.

Then I doubt it, unless you have STB or an aerial feed I don't think you can view any channels from your broadband feed.
You can view live streams for certain stations online, they do hammer your bandwidth allowance though.

What you have to do is call Customer service and ask for the Digi Tv to be installed. Do not go down the road of putting splitters etc on your installation as you create problems for yourself which if you cll out NTL because you have mucked up your Broadband you will be charged for it. Also this will create problems for other users on the network because you will use the wrong connectors, you won't have the tools to put the correct connectors on if you have them, you will get the wrong splitter again causing yourself probs and others. Also you won't know how this will affect the signal levels as you will not have the proper signal level meter to check the signal with.

You can get a TV card put it into your PC and get either digi freeview or analogue channels that come off the External ariel on your house and do it that way.

You can't have a digibox then unfortunately... NTL do not sell them, they rent them on the basis that you obtain one of their DTV services too.

I would severely warn against plugging a cable split from the back of your modem into a TV or anything like that because it can generate noise onto the line which will affect both your broadband service and for other NTL customers in the same area (as sollp said above).

Do you have a TV card in your PC? If so, get a cheap TV aerial from Argos or Wilkinsons for a few quid and use that... OR get a standard roof aerial fitted in your attic and use a freeview box then plug that into your TV card.

just to be clear, you don't get any more from doing this than you would from an ordinary aerial - and you would still need a tv or a tv card in a pc to view it.

- anything else coming down the cable needs a decoder as well as a tv/card to view it.

Yeh, but with a cheap aerial, you wouldn't have sky1, E4, paramount comedy, cartoon network and the many news channels.

I was just wondering though, is this all legal and ok? The thing is, I cant really afford to pay for tv, and I get bad ghosting from the aerial because of some large buildings near me. I extended my broadband line myself anyway, because NTL were gona charge £50, whereas I could buy all the equipment myself for £20, and it's all running fine. So i was thinking about splitting the connection where there is already a joint. Think that would affect my connection?

1) If you split the coax cable running to the modem, & run one lead to the TV & another to the modem, you still will not be able to receive Sky One, E4, Paramount, etc etc etc. The only channels you would be likely to receive would be the unencrypted analogue channels: BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4, C5, & maybe Sky News and ITV News.

2) Doing the above is a violation of ntl's Terms & Conditions. If you screw it up at all, or affect your service or that of others, then ntl are liable to charge you to fix it.

3) Yes it could affect your connection. It could also easily affect your neighbours' connections. Even if you used proper satellite grade coax with properly fitted connectors, you could still affect your & others' connections quite easily as "noise" would travel back up the coax from the TV.

It appears you need to get a better TV aerial which can get a more powerful signal and a freeview box for what you're after.

Or, it may be worth considering getting a second box installed. Of course, the cost incurred is sometimes greater than the need for the second incoming signal, but if needs must...

As for extending the cabling yourself in your home... it may be working fine now, but if you do have any problems in the future, the engineer may within his right put through a bill for his work which you would have to pay as if I understand correctly (and I apologise if this is not the case), you have put a longer cable between where the cable enters the house and the actual STB unit itself.
