NTL shell account?

Hello, I have been reading about these forums for a while but just decided to sign up.

I wanted to know if NTL provides a shell account? and if so what is my username and password?

Thanks in advance

Re: NTL shell account?

Shell account? Might want to explain what you mean there.
The user name for the main broadband account is normally the name of the person on the account/ bill followed by @ntlworld.com
eg. bill.payer@ntlworld.com
User names and passwords are normally sent out in a letter with a "welcome pack".
If by shell account you mean something like this then I think the answer is no.

Re: NTL shell account?

Right ok thanks for the information. I was just wandering because i have my own computer network at home, consisting of 10 computers (of which 2 contain VITAL information) and i was reading an article on network security and it said you can test your own network security out but you need a shell account.

If you want to test your network security you could just post your IP address lol Could always post in the IT area, we have a number of very knowledgable people on the board that might be able to suggest something.

No. Basically all you get is disk space. No shell access, no serverside scripting etc.

Re: NTL shell account?

ahh a shell account Aka command line access to a server via ssh

most hosts will not allows these due to the potential of abuse.

Oh shoosh, i have 4 and sometimes 4 :p How would they know anyway if all they see is one MAC/IP combination. You get the same bandwidth available anyways. I beleive that Plus net provide web space with Shell access if you request it; however as long as you are using a good firewall you shouldnt have any problems, if you are using a router the only thing you really have to worry about is outbound traffic.

Is that actally enforced by ntl

i mean assuming your not maxing out the connection 24/7 do they really care about how many computers you reallt have on the connection ?

or is it one of them things they put in the TOS but dont actally enforce.

can't see them kicking off paying customers just becasue they have a few to many pcs connected unless you was phaps causing extremly high levels of traffic?

Re: NTL shell account?

It's a daft condition, I have never heard of it being inforced, and in fact, I can see no way they could tell. Like you say, as long as the connection is not being stressed, I don't see what relevance it is, or indeed, what business of ntl's it is.
