If people don't vote they are letting others decide for them......

They are not a silent majority with ideals and goals better than others...

Most of them are lazy (not just physically but mentally as well) or at best just not interested.

In effect those that don't vote are willing to accept what ever the outcome is. They are letting those that vote decide for them and the fact they have done nothing to the contrary means they support the outcome

Im sure a lot of the near 40% of the electorate would take great offence at your comments.

No way. the will of the people has been decisive, accept it. The system as it stands is fine. The majority has won. Yes, I would have said the same if the verdict was otherwise.

This is a magnificent Labour victory.

Nurse! The screens!

Hardly decisive when you're outvoted by people who couldn't be bothered to vote, really. Hardly magnificent when your share of the vote is less than 2% above where it was in the magnificent victory of 1992, when the turnout was far higher*.

Moving on, the number of rebels (58 who opposed the last government in at least two of the four key rebellions**) is big enough that only about half have to rebel to defeat the government (assuming all opposition parties oppose). Add in the disquiet expressed by many elected Labour MPs after actually talking to people for once and it's going to be a bit more tricky to push through the public service privatisation and civil liberties demolition (sorry, 'progressive New Labour programme').

* 1992 34.4% of 77.7% turnout, 11,560,484 votes
2005 36.3% of 60.2% turnout, 9,486,104 votes

Difference of over 2 million votes, although not all results are in yet. Pointless fact - although the Tories have about 6.5m fewer people voting for them, the Lib Dems have the same number, about 6m.

** Tuition fees, foundation hospitals, Iraq and 2005 anti-terror bill.

All in all, a good election for the Conservatives to lose!

its been a pretty bad night for all parties, although it has also been good for all parties. Labour losts a lot of seats but are still in government with a good majority. Torys won a lot of seats but not as much as hoped and vote share reminded the same. Lib dems didn't do as well as hoped but still won seats

Something tells me there'll be more chance of "old labour" rearing it's ugly head in the next few years

Course looking at the political map, if England had it's own parliment and the results were the same as the general election, we'd be under the tories now

Let's put it this way:

1. The Lib Dem leader wanted this to be a referendum on the Iraq war, so he wasn't aiming for government, he failed on both counts. No doubt many of the Labour voters he captured will return to Labour at the subsequent parliamentary election in four years.

2. The Tory leader focused on abuse, negative campaigning, rather than debating the economy and social reform and clearly was not aiming for government.

3. Considering the above it is remarkable that Labour was able to achieve a majority of seats. Therefore, this is not a defeat for Labour it has enough of a majority to govern. This is an achievement a third successive Labour government. I think the lessons are now being learnt.

Re: The Cable Forum Exit Poll

They have clearly been hit, a loss of nearly 100 seats is quite damaging. Although i think a lot of votes may return to labour at the next election

Indeed, not for nothing is the PM called "Teflon Tony". Only he could get away with everything and still maintain a majority. If I was him, i'd be feeling extremely lucky to have what seats he has, rather than what he has lost.

Re: The Cable Forum Exit Poll

If brown takes over, labour dont do anything controversial for a while, and the iraq issue goes away then labour may be able to recover.

Howard has resigned. Very odd. He did ok, they have come back quite strong and dont look like they used to. Maybe theres something going on in the background

Re: The Cable Forum Exit Poll

Howard's just announced he's resigning before the next election, probably quite a long time before it (after they've rigged the leadership rules to stop the mad old grannies that make up the Tory Party electing a toaster, or something).

Back to the crypt for him.
