Are they GIFs, and do the have a solid colour background?
www.gifworks.com has a colour replace feature where you can replace a background cololur with transparent. If the background colour does appear in the foreground though, you will get 'holes' in your pic.
TBH though, with most pictures the foreground image is blended into the background to make it look better, so when you remove the background, they will go all fuzzy. Most pictures need trimming like that.
