To find this information directly from your modem click here:
http://root:root@192.168.100.1/P_operation.htm
The second and third fields give you the maximum downstream and upstream speeds.

Re: how do u check you conection speed?
That direct link fails for me as well.
Try http://192.168.100.1
Username & password = root
Click on 'operation configuration'. Maximum Downstream Data Rate shows you which service you are on (mine shows 2048000 bps for the 2Meg service).

Re: how do u check you conection speed?
I have checked my speed see: -
Tue, 03 May 2005 14:17:24 GMT
1st 128K took 1453 ms = 90208 Bytes/sec = approx 751 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1453 ms = 90208 Bytes/sec = approx 751 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1453 ms = 90208 Bytes/sec = approx 751 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1422 ms = 92174 Bytes/sec = approx 767 kbits/sec
Now can anyone tell me what it means please (I did do Computer Science at school back in the early 70's (cards and tape days) but this may as
well be chinese) .
http://192.168.100.1 does not work for me either (says connection timed out).
Thanks in advance

Re: how do u check you conection speed?
looks like you are on 750 K speed.. are you meant to be upgraded to 2 MB ?
also the 192 address won't work if you have broadband via your set top box.

Re: how do u check you conection speed?
Okay - these links will only work with a stand alone cable modem (SACM) and possibly not all SACMs at that. If it doesn't work - don't blame me! They all work with my grey Ambit NTL:home 120 modem.
modem root page: http://root:root@192.168.100.1/
You can get to most pages from here by clicking the appropriate links. For example, click on Operation Configuration to get the page above. However, there are three extra pages for which there are no links:
Event log: http://root:root@192.168.100.1/P_log.htm
lists the event log of the modem
Interface rate: http://root:root@192.168.100.1/P_rate.htm
counts packets sent and received on each interface
Upstream burst descriptor: http://root:root@192.168.100.1/P_ubd.htm
erm, I could hazard a guess but I don't really know
I strongly advise people NOT to fiddle with the settings in any of these pages. An errant click of the mouse could easily stop your modem working. Then you will probably need a call out to fix it again - for which you will be charged. Be warned!

I am very miffed indeed .
Nice Scots fellow says I should be upgraded within 15 Minutes (got through on 150 immediately).
Also we have an NTL:home 200 Modem not through a set top box
The readings now say: -
Wed, 04 May 2005 13:42:44 GMT
1st 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 516 ms = 254016 Bytes/sec = approx 2113 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 562 ms = 233224 Bytes/sec = approx 1940 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 516 ms = 254016 Bytes/sec = approx 2113 kbits/sec
I think this means I have been upgraded?
And the root site works now
Thanks

Re: how do u check you conection speed?
Hmmm...still cant get any of altis's links to work. I get:-
The page cannot be displayed
I'm using an ntl:home 120. Thought it might have something to do with the router, so connected the pc direct to modem. Also turned off Zone Alarm & windowsxp firewall, but still no luck.
Works ok if I go to http://192.168.100.1 & then manually enter the user name & password.

Re: how do u check you conection speed?
This problem looks like a 'security fix' that Microsoft has introduced into Internet Explorer. The links work fine in Firefox (1.0.3) and Opera (7.51).
More details here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=834489
If you want, you can prevent IE from baulking at these addresses by patching the registry - see the article above.
