Re: Generic Host Process want to act as server

svc.exe has been linked to spyware infiltration in the past.Have you run an up to date spyware scan recently?

I believe we may be talking about svchost.exe here (Generic Host Process) - see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056 i.e. not spyware.

mine has 'generic host process' allowed as a server in the trusted zone, but not in the internet zone.

trusted zone security is set to 'medium' & Internet zone to 'high'.

What we may be thinking of (and I do know what svchost is) and what the poster has stated in his post are two different things. Unless the OP comes back and comfirms if svc.exe is what is asking for permission or wether he has mistaken svchost for svc.exe we won't be sure

Re: Generic Host Process want to act as server

I recall reading something on the Zone Labs forum about this. Might be worth searching there.

I was assuming that when the OP put the Title of this thread as "Generic Host Process wants to act as server" that this was the message they were getting from ZoneAlarm and that it would therefore refer to svchost.exe (I even checked on my own ZA setup to see what I had for that.)

ZA have this on their website: http://pralerts.zonelabs.com/pranaly...2&tab=overview

But I suppose that it may indeed be that there wasn't a typo and that ZA really did confuse the two programs - which would worry me.
