Unhappy Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

Hi - My first post, so here goes!

2MB BB, 3 TV STBs.

Have recently had 3rd STB installed, which has been faulty (choppy picture), so had NTL come out to replace it today. Thats all fine now. Yesterday, internet started going at about 10KbitSec, fluctuating between that and full speed (would stick at 10 KBPS for about half an hour, then go to full speed for 10 mins roughly). Asked NTL engineer blokey about it today, and he said it would etiher work, or not. And it might as well not be. All in all, he couldnt be bothered to look at it for me.

Any ideas what it could be? All connections ok, tried through router on several PCs, and direct PC <-ethernet->modem.

Re: Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

Does your internet come through one of the STBs or through a Stand-Alone Cable Modem (SACM)?

Thanks!

I've been trying to get to the web interface on the NTL branded Standalone modem, yet with no luck. When connected straight in with the ethernet cable, and ip set to 192.168.100.2 on the PC. Cant even ping 192.168.100.1

any ideas?

Check Connection settings in IE and make sure you arent using a proxy this will stop you accessing the CM configuration.

Which firewall software do you use also if any?

Re: Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

You will have problems connecting to the CM if you are specifying an IP on the PC when it is connected directly to it.

Make sure you haven't got your firewall set to stop you accessing the CM.
Set your connection to get an IP address automatically.
Reboot the CM and then the PC.
Now try again.

Your PC should pick up the IP address assigned to it by the CM.

Re: Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

Right. Connected, straight ethernet cable. No firewall or other internet impairing stuff. Is the address i need the one that appears as "Default Gateway" in the windows Lan status thingy?

Re: Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

roughly how far are you from the cab/dp, the small green box somewhere on the street that connects you to NTL's network?

are you having any problems with any of the STB's? ie, loss if pictures intermitent freezing of channels that kind of thing?

Had a problem with 1 STB - replaced STB and fine now.

If the thingy your talking about is the greenish box on the side of the house, its just the other side of the wall. If not, what am i looking for?

Re: Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

is should be a small metal cabinet in the street somewhere, it might be by the side of your house, although it is normally at the end of the road or near a junction on the road.

Theres a thing under the ground about 25m away (with CATV printed on top). Does that make any difference?

Re: Paaaainfullll Boadband speed.

OK, this isnt funny now! 0.6KBytes/Sec DL rate. Whats the best way to deal with this RE: NTL? What (if any) speed tests do they trust?

Thanks for the help.
