Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Well, all installed now.
I had a major problem during first boot up and I found out that it was due to the VIA SATA drivers being buggy so someone made their own, which work fine:
http://www.64bitstuff.com/index.php?download=26 (free registration needed to download).
The files have to be copied to a floppy and then you press F6 during installation of Windows.

I have installed the drivers for my Audigy 2 and the Radeon 9800 Pro with only one problem - apparently an .inf file was missing but they're still installed.
I expect to be updating the drivers whenever new versions are out.

Other interesting stuff I've noticed is that there is a 64-bit version of Explorer as well as 32-bit for plugins which don't work in the 64-bit one.
As a side note I'll mention that both Firefox and Thunderbird installed with no problems, Flash also works in the former.
I tried to install Media Player 10 but it said it was incompatible with this version of Windows - I checked and I already had a 64-bit version installed.

All the SP2 stuff is included from XP 32 and it looks like the task manager shows which programs are running 32-bit code (see screenshot).
I'm happy with it all so far, very stable (it's based on Server 2003, not XP) and the GUI is extremely fast.

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Although the stepping is getting worse, i've got my 3000+ oc'ed to an 3800+, now benches comparably to 9800p w/ FX-53s! AMD are such fools for allowing this to happen.

My OC is modest aswell, just over 2.4ghz, most people cry over when they can't get 2.6, 2.7ghz....why can't people be satisfied!

Anyway, for the people who have got it working fine at driver level, would they keep it over XP, or keep dual booting for the time being? Thanks.

There's nothing I haven't been able to do yet in this OS, I plan to make a list of compatible programs/hardware soon.
Only Symantec have released an anti-virus program but that's not a big issue at the moment because there's only one 64 bit virus, and that's a harmless one.

The majority of them won't thanks to NX.

Oh gawd! As if my self build wasn't tricky enough, now i have this 64 bit stuff to sort out as well. Still, I suppose that it's better It gets done now than in 6 months time when my new machine has been up and running for ages.

You can't unless you have an MSDN subscription at the moment, it's only been released to people/companies who have one and system builders.

I think the general release will be closer to the end of April.

Avast has a 64 bit version, free too. Along with a couple of others listed here 64 bit drivers too.

If I was you mate, i'd get XP32 up and running properly first, and make sure there's no problems and you are happy. If you go in too far, and there is a problem, it doubles your trouble-shooting checklist that you have to go through to find the problem. Its best to do it in as small a steps as possible.

Useful list indeed.
