Problem with colour on monitor

At work I have a problem with the colour on my monitor.

One colour really. The computer is on Win 98 and when you go onto a folder i.e. My Documents, the left hand bar which has the title of the folder is white as it should be, but the right hand side where it should also be white is a gray colour. This also happens when surfing the web, with some pages where it should be white, it comes up gray. In MS Word, the document comes up gray, very much the same as the gray in the window where you write a reply on here. I've tried to settings, colour and brightness on the monitor but couldn't do anything, so it must be something on the computer its self, I know the graphics card on it is like 4MB and the colour setting is on 24bit so I don't understand whats wrong, anyone know?

Just guessing here....

Right click on your desktop, go to properties, then Appearance, click on the tab where it says "Scheme" and select "Windows Standard"

See if this helps
