Re: The Youth of Today...

two threads got my attention.. but the answer got mixed together
Quote:
It's difficult to teach "life" skills at school.
RE is one avenue, unfortunately it's rarely used properly ie; to enlighten rather than disappear into obscurity, like Millay said.

The reason things like this are becoming more important, is because parents increasingly see school as a glorified baby sitter all through a child's education, instead of a complimentary service to their own home teaching efforts.
Some parents don't even bother to talk to their kids (i see this first hand, running a youth group), a video and a plate of oven chips is a routine for many, sadly .

School has become not only a dumping ground academically, but morally (ethically) and socially too.

Kids are getting worse, but the spiral began long ago, because (a generalisation obviously) bad parents, breed bad kids and therefore increasingly poor future parents.

Questions like.. "will things ever get better?" and "do people actually know the difference between right and wrong?" are a whole debate apart.

Re: The Youth of Today...

I don't know what the problem is it wasnt that long ago I was a kid, and by no means was I a saint. perhaps theres just a greater number of kids that are a bit ott. where I live weve had running battles (teenagers running up and down the road with scffold poles) when we first moved in because we where 3 young blokes we had our door basically kicked in and had to beat them out of the house. I then had one of my magnetic adverts stolen of the car. I had my jago jeep wrecked I then on saturday had a tire on my car slit..

I live in a really nice area of the owrld, but am just in a problem area...

but i can not think of a solution...

We had similar problems a couple, maybe 4 years ago with six or eight teenaged wa***rs.

I collared on of the little sh**s in broad daylight, told him if he and his mates didnt get of side, stop disturbing the neighbourhood at 3 am on a Friday and Saturday night, they would answer to me. Lonag and the short of the conversation was that I knew who they where, where they lived, and if there was any more trouble (cars being vandalised, gardens being wrecked etc at night), I'd go round, beat the s**t outof all of them, cause sooner or later I'd get the right one.

Rarely heard a peer from tham after that........

Strange that.

Re: The Youth of Today...

Reading the experiences of people here it has to be said that yes, there are without doubt problem youth. But this should not be a them or us war going on. There is now sufficient legislation and anti-social behaviour orders can be used to target offenders. But I still believe the majority of teenagers in the UK are not the problem. There may well be in certain areas gangs of anti-social youths but there are problably at lot more who are not involved in such behaviour.

More should be done to strengthen communities and people ought to build good relationships with all neighbours and provision should be made for facilities for youths. Teenagers should not be seen as an enemy but as part of community life. Perhaps it would be more helpful if people just dump their TVs in the rubbish tips and socialise more.

Re: The Youth of Today...

Or we kick out the pc brigade and bring in tougher much tougher measures to make sure they understand being a yob and being abusive and wrecking nice neighbour hoods is not a wise thing, and that once in the slammer, there is no more comfy beds and telly and games to play and nice food. It is a single cell to you, with a tiny barred window with no glass just bars right through winter the only warmth is a tiny radiator and a blanket. They would have a toilet and 2 rolls per month of toilet paper, loose it or sell it dont care. No smokes no luxuries of any single solitary kind, even visitation would be severly limited.

WHY?? I hear you ask why be so severe...how else do you explain it to there thick minds that they aint gonna re-offend...by making them live a nightmare.

I wonder how many would stop offending after 2years of hell. Sorry if this offends but its how to stop them look at other countries measures we would never get to use them because they get a pc brigade ranting, but yet they have it in order don;t they.

It's very difficult though, I have often had youngsters take an interest when I have had some of my classic cars outside the house. I would be only to pleased to show them more of my collection if only I could be 100% sure they were not going to come back and cause damage or steal when I am not about.

Because I feel kids are not as easy to trust these days, I guess I am excluding them from activities that I enjoyed as a youngster. I had a neighbour who used to let me in his shed to help with rebuilding his motorbikes, he even got an old scrambling bike and we rebuilt it, and then he gave it to me.

I would be only to happy to give some of the kids a few quid to help me paint the fence etc, when they ask. Unfortunately the situation today means I discourage them from coming anywhere near my property.

Hiya,

This thread reminds me of something that came up in discussion amongst us at Barnardo's -

http://www.barnardos.org.uk/newsande...se.jsp?id=1611

If anyone's interested in the work we do (purely from an information POV, I'm not here to get cash out of ya... well, not today anyway )I'd love to help.

****ââ‚ ¬Ã‚¢ terms such as †˜thugâÃà ‚¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, †˜yobâà¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€žà ƒ‚¢ and †˜loutâÃà ‚¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ were commonly used to portray childrenââ‚à ƒ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s identities in a sensationalised, negative light.
†¢ articles actively de-humanised young people involved in youth crime, using words such as heartless and evil.****

What would the author expect someone to say or think of a kid who had just commited criminal damage etc to their property?

***The over-riding message the report found was, †˜children in trouble were generally portrayed as callous or disrespectfulâ↚¬â„¢. SHAPE believes that hostile terms help to fuel the idea that children in trouble are trouble, with stories often being severly biased with no interest in portraying both sides of the story**

Again, not many victims would describe them otherwise. I think it was shocking that my parents were told by a police officer to consider dropping the claim for £350 worth of damage, because he is a nice boy...

The nice boy should be treated exactly the same as he treats others, this country has people who always look for a way to excuse people who act like this, broken home, poor.....the excuses never end.

The demonisation of youth does nobody any favours, not least those who perceive they are going to be victims of crime committed by young people because of the image they have of them. And, as that Barnardos link points ot the young are actually more likely to be the victims of crime and most do not get into trouble.

There is too little done in terms of preventative measures because of lack of resources. There's a lad in my youngest's class. His mum was a prostitute who was murdered, his dad a child abuser in nick. He lives with his nan (who is ill equipped to look after him) and brother (who's not exactly a good role model). When this kid was 5 the school reported concerns about his welfare (wandering the streets alone etc) to Social Services who said they could not do an assessment for 18 months to 2 years. He's now 9 and there is still no support from the authorities. The lad has good support from us and other families but he needs proper intervention because you can see he's primed to go on a downward spiral. This kid is not to blame for his situation but I can see he will soon be labelled as a 'yob', '****' etc when his life story has been so desperate.
