I only get NTL channel through RF and no sound from x-box

Hi,

I had ntl installed a couple of weeks ago now and as yet have not got the STB to work as i would like.

This is my setup:

* I have no terrestrial aerial.
* A separate cable modem.
* I have the Samsung SMT-2100C.
* I have a TV with 1 scart socket.
* A video with 2 scart sockets.
* I have an xBox.

This is what i would like:
* To have my TV receiving terrestrial channels on the normal channels (i.e. 1-5) and a cable channel.
* I also want my cable channel to be coming through my scart socket on my TV.
* I want to be able to record NTL through my video.
* I want to play my xbox on my TV.

Currently I have the following setup:
* Cable coming from outside into my STB (obviously !!)
* Have the scart labelled VCR going to my xbox.
* Have the scart labelled TV going to my VCR.
* From my VCR I have the other scart going to the TV.
* Have the RF cable going from my STB (labelled output) to my VCR.
* Have the RF cable from my VCR to my TV.

I now have the following problems:
* when i try to tune my TV or VCR to pick up the channels i only get the one cable channel and nothing else.
* when i use my xbox I only get the picture but no sound at all.

Things i have tried:
* moving the scart leads around (i.e. having the xbox going into my VCR from the VCR to the STB and then into the TV) but still no sound.
* plugging the xbox straight into the TV and i get picture and sound.
* using the scart from the VCR (which i know works) and plugging that between the STB and the TV and plugging the xbox into the STB where it says VCR, but i still only get a picture and no sound.
* have called CS faults and they sent some signal to the box and said it should sort it out but still no sound from the xbox or channels 1-5 via RF.

I would appreciate any ones help or advice on this one.

Cheers.

... cool forum BTW

Why do you want to do that?

qwerty!

The best you can do is:
Scart: STB(TV) -> VCR -> TV
RF: STB -> VCR -> TV

AFAIK, the Scart socket labeled VCR on the STB is only an output so you will never get the XBox to work through it.

You could buy the legendary SCART Video Unit from Argos:
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...clickfrom=name
and that would solve your Scart problems.

As for the RF "problems" the STB only outputs the channel that it decodes and that is why you are only picking up one channel on your TV. The NTL cable does currently have the analogue channels 1-5 on and some onlder boxes were fitted with passthroughs to the RF out. Your only solution there would be to get a cable-splitter-combiner fitted.

Re: I only get NTL channel through RF and no sound from x-box

Cheers for your reply Bob!!

Ok so i guess both scarts on the STB are outputs, one to the VCR and one to the TV. I will try your suggested setup for scart and will try plugging the xbox into the VCR on a seperate scart. This should allow be (in therory) to turn off the stb and have the VCR on AV2 and play on the xbox with sound!! I will try this later!! (This is how i had it set up before i got the stb.)
Otherwise its a "legendary SCART Video Unit from Argos" job until i get a better TV !!

As for the RF signal i am interested to know what this "cable-splitter-combiner" unit is?? Does it split the cable before the stb?? Is this supplied by NTL or do i have to purchase one, and if so can u recommend any sites?

Ok cheers for your help!!

It is supplied by NTL if you request it at installation (otherwise you will have to pay a £50 call out fee). I have not any recommendations as I do not have one - but others on this group do so searching the forum for passthrough or splitter should yield results.

Basically, it splits the NTL cable before it goes into the STB and then combines this with the RF output of the STB.

Get a scart switch/sharing box.
