As far as my limited knowledge goes, evangelicals seem to manage to accept the church up to about the time of Augustine in the 5th Century (Calvinists especially make a great play of Augustine's theology). From then until the Reformation, give or take the odd Cathar, Lollard or Hussite heretic, the Catholic church was the only church in Western Europe. So, for a period of over 1000 years God appears to have been quite prepared to tolerate this "false" church. Why?

My own opinion is that there appears to be teachings within Catholicism and CoE which go directly against the teachings of the Bible. There appears to be a school of thought within both that followers are to only listen to what the priest/vicar says, again against the Bible. This seems to come from around the 15th or 16th centuary when it was decided that more responsibility and 'power' was to be given to it's leaders.
I will never deride the good work undertaken by Catholics and there are many who's love for Jesus would put many 'evangelicals' to shame, but I cannot say I am comfortable with a doctrine which teaches that which goes against the word of Jesus.
