Telephone Ring

I have recently joined NTL and have noticed that the phone rings sightly different to that of BT. NTL`s phone ring consist of three initial rings followed by the normal set of two rings (ring-ring-ring, ring-ring, ring-ring) where BT`s (ring-ring, ring-ring, ring-ring). Is this common to NTL`s network or possible a fault on the line? or could it be a means of identifying which phone is ringing if for example the BT line was retained and used as a second line.

On a BT line the ringing current is generated at the exchange and applied by the line card, on an NTL line it is generated by the primary multiplexer in the cabinet, this could explain the difference.
