Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please
Apologies if this has already been mentioned, in a cyber cafe in spain with a meter so I don´t have time to read all the thread but will the cutbacks affect the speed upgrades since it mentions "no network upgrades".
Also what is the maximum speed a pace box can handle and why is that since CM technology is quite old now, confused as to why it seems so limited.

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please
No indication (yet!) that the cutbacks will affect the speed upgrades.
The maximum speed the Pace boxes will handle is 1 Meg (according to some posts here, they will actually handle more, but with decreasing reliability, so NTL will replace with Samsung for anything faster). AFAIK the limiting factor is processing power, as the box has to handle DTV as well as Broadband. I understand the Samsungs hace two processors, thus can handle the higher speeds, even though the technology and software is basically the same.

All new AOL Broadband Gold members on the ntl cable network will also receive a broadband service of speeds up to 1Mbps from Monday 7 February 2005. Existing AOL Broadband Gold members on the ntl cable network will be upgraded from the current speed of up to 750 Kbps to a faster connection of up to 1 Mbps as quickly as possible.

So perhaps it won't be long now before regular ntl broadband customers get the opportunity to upgrade

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please
NTL need to get these speed increases out asap and then announce another increase to at least 8mb. By the autumn I will be able to get 8mb from BT and UKonline, as well as 4mb including line rental from Bulldog. I am sure there are other areas, apart from London, where there will be this level of competition soon.

It must be nice to be able to predict the future so accurately. But, if you are right, will those higher speeds be subject to any restrictions that may affect how you can use the connection. Don't forget that even today the majority of high bandwidth users on so called unlimited services could have their contracts terminated for breach of terms and conditions. Think about it.

Ukonline has a 500gb cap, Bulldog has no cap. What is the NTL cap 30GB?

Compare it to some of the more mainstream isps and they are fairly competitive.

You didn't think hard enough!
UKonline may have a 500 gb cap but if they terminated the contract of every user who breached their AUP they would lose the majority of their heavy users. Look at section 1 of the AUP.

The important fact that many are overlooking when talking about caps is that ALL ISPs have clauses which they can use to terminate the contracts of most heavy users.
Oooops, I have probably just breached UKonlines copyright with that quote.

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please
I just want to download files quicker. NTL has been very reliable, only one outage since I have had it, but they need to remain competitive with download speeds or people will use adsl.

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please
ianathuth please dont accuse heavier users to be all into piracy their is different uses for the traffic and its each user's right for privacy of what they use their connection for, you are not the internet police and you are not there to judge other's. If an ISP has proof of a user breaking the AUP then of course they can take the matter further with that customer.
