Can I replace the Blueyonder WAP?
Hi,
GOOD NEWS I now have a totally wireless installation. The Blueyonder supplied Wireless Access Point is connected to the Ethernet Socket on the back of the set-top box, and the supplied Wireless USB Adapter is connected to my Desktop PC. I do not have any cable modem or router.
BAD NEWS I am unable to connect my Wireless Enabled Laptop to the Wireless Access Point as Blueyonder use a non-standard 8 character password, instead of the normal 10 or 13 characters. In other words Blueyonder suppy a connection to one machine, and one machine only. Can I replace their Wireless Access Point with another, but standard, Wireless Router? Or is the Blueyonder unit still required as it is the Cable Modem and Wireless Router combined into one box?
Naturally, the BY Help Desk were no help at all on this point!
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the board.
umm huh!? The WAP isnt a modem it is simply connected to the modem in the Set Top Box, you should be able to completely replace it with a Wireless Router of your own choosing with no problems, you will just need to register the new MAC address.

I don't think TW/BY customers have to register MAC addresses.

Re: Can I replace the Blueyonder WAP?
Hi,
Thanks for your advice Neil & Zeph.
In view of your comments I was thinking of purchasing either a Belkin 54g Wireless Cable/DSL Router or a Linksys WAP54G-UK. Do I pay my money and take my chance, or would one of them be better suited for my needs?
Also, my laptop has an integrated 10/100 LAN card. As another option,
would I also be able to use the BY conection by connecting the laptop via a cable to the Ethernet socket on the set-top box?
Many thanks,

Re: Can I replace the Blueyonder WAP?
I have that Router on NTL and have absolutely no problems with it, its very well featured. I recommend buying a WiFi Card/Dongle for the laptop as thats how theyre meant to be but if you want the Router has 4 10/100 ports on it so you can wire it if you like.

The Linksys WAP54G is a wireless access point, not a router.
If you want to get a Linksys router (& they are very good IMO), you'd want a WRT54G - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...499171-4094805
