Recording NTL Digital
I'm thinking about getting a digital TV subscription, and already have NTL phone & Broadband, so it seems to be the logical choice (besides, I don't really want a dish on the house!)
I'm not sure how the STB connects to the TV, but presume it will be Scart. My question is this, would I be able to watch something on one channel, and record something on another simultaneously, using only the feed from NTL?

Re: Recording NTL Digital
you can do the following:
1) record one digital channel, and watch a terrestrial channel (i.e. using your aerial)
2) record a terretrial channel whilst watching a digital channel
3) record a terrestrial channel and watch a terrestrial channel
It's not possible to record one digital channel whilst watching another digital channel using one set-top box.

Not using the NTL digital signal. Some boxes support an analogue passthrough for Channels 1 to 5. You can record these, and watch a digital channel, or record a digital channel and watch Analogue channels 1 -5.
You can rent extra boxes from NTL (and about £16 a month each) to enable you to watch one digital channel and record another.

You will need to ask the installation guy to fit one as none of the new STBs come with them (but only if you live in a Langley area).

How many scart sockets does your video and TV have? Ideally you need 2 on each so your VCR has a lead from the STB and a lead to the TV, whilst another lead goes from the STB to the TV.
When recording on the VCR you need to have the VCR tuned to the Scart socket served directly by the STB lead, not from the TV.
If the TV is off there will be no signal down the TV > VCR lead, yet if the TV is on the TV > VCR lead will only get the channel being watched by the TV.
Edit: Doh I should have known altis would be along with the diagram

So if I understand you right, your VCR is not connected to the STB by a direct scart lead. You can record from the STB by use of the coaxial feed (provided the coaxial is connected to the TV out side of the STB and to the aerial in side of the VCR. You will need to tune the VCR to the STB's coaxial signal. Hopefully the VCR and STB's use different channel frequencies.

Re: Recording NTL Digital
It could be a faulty scart lead between the STB and VCR or a one way scart lead that hasn't got all pins connected.
