Area Code Issue

hmmm.. Ever since the day i've had NTL installed... (Nearly two years), i've had a constant Area code issues, Contacted CS many times, they say they'll look into it, but nothing ever gets done, they say things like we'll pass on the problem to tech support, and we're running test and will call you back.. they never have....

The problem is that my phone lines thinks i'm in a another location... I live in Folkestone (shepway) Kent, and my local area code is 01303... and with most people, when you wanna rung someone in the same area code as you, you dial just the normal number bar the area code...

however in my case my phone line thinks i'm in dover... say i was to dial 123456... its the same as me dialing 01304123456 rather than 01303... so basically if i wanna make a local call and phone friends/family in the same area code, i MUST dial 01303...

All in coming calls are uneffected; only outgoing; if some dials my phone number with the 01303 prefix they get through... if some in the 01303 area phones my number without the areacode they get through...

has anyone else ever had the same problem? did CS fix it within 2 years? the problem was reported to NTL, 20 min after the engineer left... we wanted to test the phone straight away...

other than this, i've had no probs with NTL, all i ahve at the mo is basic 123 phone line, and 750k broadband...

*edit* if it helps, my postcode is CT19...

Re: Area Code Issue

Hi Oinky.

If you'd like to PM me your account number or phone number, I'll pass this on to a friend in 2nd level faults for you, and get it looked into this week (probably Thursday). One of the mods can confirm I work for ntl.

Re: Area Code Issue

It does sound a bit strange, are neighbours the same, maybe it's a geographical error when the areas have been divided up for the codes?

One way you could workaround it I guess, at least for people you call regularly. If you have a phone with a phonebook on it (you can add peoples' numbers and just bring their name up to dial). Then you could make sure you when you add people to the phonebook that you add the full phone number (including the relevant dialing code), the same as you would if you were adding them to the phonebook on a mobile phone.

That way it would make sure the number dialed always included the right dialing code too.

I know you shouldn't have to, but it's a workaround for now.

Re: Area Code Issue

sounds to me like this could be an issue on the switch with the routing, i came accross something similar to this last year, but cant remember what the problem was exactly.

Re: Area Code Issue

This sounds like the point of entry is wrong for phone number .This sometimes happens in certain areas it takes about 5 min to correct by the switch staff

I would agree, the switch for that area would be Ashford. ex-BCM.

Re: Area Code Issue

I HAVE had that exact problem.

I used to live in Market Harborough (area code 01858) but when I had ntl installed my area code was for the nearby town of Kettering (01536).

The good news was that I didn't care to begin with and never actually received a bill! The bad news was that when I did care, I told them and subsequently started receiving bills!

It was a few years ago and I can't remember how I got it sorted but I don't remember it being particulatly painful. . .

Good luck with your probem.
