As I said in post 24 it's about 2 years too late. I have a very nice MD separate player I bought 4 years ago, even had a keyboard socket to make typing in the track names easier. I have had two MD portables, and tried NetMD (that had more problems with an older PC than the apps, though they were still proprietary).

MD-Hi is great, but not as easy to use as additional storage for your PC, its MO so slower technology. I'd have adopted it as I have a back catalogue of MDs, but I'm not going to buy it now

Exactly - it's great to be able to have your entire collection at your fingertips, and decide on the fly what you want to listen to, rather than having to work out what you're going to feel like listening to 5 hours before.

There are some available but they are bulky and dont look very nice.
I guess I'l wait and see.
Belkin do a strap-on battery pack which takes standard AA's which is about £45 although I've seen them going on eBay for about half that.

Each to their own I guess, but I would say that you're comparing apples with pears here. If you were comparing the iPod with the new Sony portable HDD music player then fair enough, but I still think the 'Pod would win on every count against that - especially the looks department.

You're not just paying for the components, you're paying for the design - the reason why Van Goughs sell for far more than Ikea prints!

Re: FAO Ipod people

Whats cool about storing so many songs is that you can choose them to suit your mood. I've put every Cd on my Ipod so I can choose whatever I want to hear when I want.
Just got to convert my Vinyl accross now.

Re: FAO Ipod people

I have a question. I am getting one today, and was wondering, could i save an album **example** U2 onto my computer. Then download it from itunes or whatever to the Ipod, could i then delete the album and still use the the album on the ipod. I have heard that the ipod automatrically edits itself to match exactly what you have on your computer

Itunes calls this auto updating, and you can turn this off. If you do, you cand drag and drop music fro your main itunes library

Re: FAO Ipod people

so how do you then add tunes from library if i have auto update turned off. I *example* have two albums on my computer, U2,and Stereophonics....i upload U2 to the ipod...then delete the album from my computer (itunes library)...i turn off autoupdate...then connect ipod, and upload stereophonics. Does this work?

Re: FAO Ipod people

You go to the main iTunes library, click and hold the mouse button on the song or songs you want, then drag them to the iPod icon on the left.

Click the eject symbol next to the iPod icon when you want to unplug it. If you decide you don't want a song or album on the iPod, just click the iPod icon, select the song or album and press "Delete".

It does work that way. In fact, if, like me you want to use the iPod on more than one computer, and don't have enough space to have the same iTunes library on both, I think it's the only way you can get it working.

Alternatively, I also use a program called "Anapod Explorer" from http://www.redchairsoftware.com that enables you to manage the iPod directly from explorer. Costs about £15 though. The only thing Anapod explorer cannot transfer is songs from the iTunes store. You need to use iTunes for these.

Thats why you can also create different customized playlists.

From iTunes help:

"To transfer songs manually from your iTunes library to iPod, choose Edit > Preferences and click the iPod tab. Click the Music tab and select "Manually manage songs and playlists." Then drag songs from your library or playlist to iPod in the Source list. "

You can do this, but remember if you drop, lose or damage your iPod, you will need to rip these CD's all over again. A spare 40Gb HDD costs under £30 and will save you hrs of re ripping.
