Re: Internet Tax To Fund The BBC!

Well there is the article I posted that says it is Fixed and the 5G thing I also said when i posted the link to the article that does say Fixed

Broadband is fitted into 2 categories I believe maybe 3 with Starlink Fixed in with a cable and Mobile is well mobile so Mobile broadband by its very definition is not classed as Fixed surely

---------- Post added at 08:52 ---------- Previous post was at 08:48 ----------

iplayer also needs a log in so the app just opening does not mean you are digesting content. If in the unlikely case TVL get a warrant and find the iplayer app on the TV does not prove anything as would removing any internet connection the TV . Just turn up to court and so not let them do it without you being there

Sorry I think we are getting crossed wires here and it's more than likely my fault

What I mean by device is something which can provide internet to multiple devices.

1 device = 1 modem/router

So a mobile phone can be a modem/router for multiple devices, a tablet with a sim slot can be a modem/router for multiple devices, 4G/5G Modem can obviously be used for multiple devices.

Normal home broadband is a modem/router for multiple devices.

Any device with a sim slot could and will be classed as a device capable of providing a data connection to multiple devices.

Now the whole "Fixed only" thing will change because once people realise it's only "Fixed" connections, they will cancel their BT, Sky, VM etc and move to "mobile" broadband which will then cause the £11 fee to be added to them.

This is the problem, with it and why it will cause riots because as I say who is going to pay such insane prices?

Businesses will more than likely get "bulk discount" because otherwise it's going to cost them thousands if not tens of thousands per month.

Going to be interesting to see how things fall though with this, going forward because it could be another nail in the coffin of Labour if they go with this approach.

I think this is an unlikely scenario.

It has always been the case on this forum that we are over-represented by the sort of technically minded, flexible sort of people who are willing and able to make switches like this in order to get an extra bit of utility (or save a few ). But this just doesn’t reflect the attitudes of the overwhelming majority of the population, for whom setting up a home modem/router utilising 5G (and doing it well) is just a leap too far.

In the real world, 5G can’t compete with fibre for sustained download speeds, it can’t compete on cost and it can’t compete on convenience. Doubtless some people will do as you suggest but not nearly enough of them for it to be of concern. Especially as most households are presently paying for a TV licence at £180 a year, and the broadband tax is proposed to cost £132. If this happens it will be sold as a reduction in what we pay for the BBC.

Re: Internet Tax To Fund The BBC!

170meg consistent with 300+meg with 80 to 120 meg upload . Been using Lebara 5G mobile as my main internet over 6 months so not quite the case Paul

Think it is perfectly acceptable. Lebara image shows I have downloaded over 1TB per month the last 2 months. I have to rinse and repeat the Lebara £9.98 unlimited deal every 3 months

Re: Internet Tax To Fund The BBC!

I can reach up to 500Mbp/s on Lebara at my house, £20 a month if you don't get a deal.

I on average though will get 180Mbp/s and am able to game, stream and upload almost identically to my VM 1Gb connection.

So if they add the £11 to the VM connection, I could quite easily switch to my 5G Modem with my GL.Inet router connected to my Dream Machine Pro, but for now as it stands I will stick with the VM.

The point in terms of public policy is this: how many average home internet users do you think have a GL.Inet router connected to a Dream Machine Pro, or any equivalent set-up? Or are prepared to go out and buy the kit and learn how to use it?

Ordinary users simply don’t behave the way hobbyists do. That’s why this policy, if applied only to fixed line broadband, will work just fine.

I have taught a few and unlocked Gigacube routers can be bought on ebay for a ton. You literally just plug a sim in and it is exactly the same as any other router. Plenty of people use it on sites and boats etc

The majority won't and won't be bothered to until they potentially start being charged for more than just their BT, Sky, VM etc connection.

I know how easy it is - because I took the time to read up on how to run a 4G router with external antenna during covid when our rural fixed line broadband couldn’t cope with the whole family on zoom all day. But then when our neighbour wanted to do it I had to sit down and give him a lesson, and then I ended up in a long conversation with someone from the community council which had already piloted a mobile data solution and decided it didn’t work - entirely because they picked the wrong network provider, didn’t know aerial selection and placement was a thing, nor that the hard data that would have facilitated their trial becoming a resounding success is open source and easily accessible, providing of course you have the confidence and sufficient motivation to use it.

Which is the point about boating and camper van people - it’s a self selecting group which is already used to finding innovative solutions to their needs. Not representative of your average home user.

At which point they still won’t change.

If a large number of people start using 5G for Terabyte downloads in an area, I can forecast that the Providers might start changing their T&Cs...
