Portion of chips at £4.50?
In North West Leeds, Midgeleys (a really good fish and chip shop) sells a large portion of chips (enough for two people) for £3.45.
A good size fish and chips is £10.75, but it really fills you up.

Down near Cambridge a regular portion of chips is £3.79 which is enough for 2 people and large is £4.99.

when i was a kid in the early sixties we used to get a 1d bag of scraps from the chippy

The house is too warm at 26c and the heatings not even on, tomorrow morning is said to feel like 6c at 6am so I may have to not go into work in shorts! Then I'll melt in my Clean room suit.

My diesel is now £2.23 per litre, that just over £10 a gallon.
Yes I put BP Ultimate in, but even still, Standard diesel is £2.00 per litre in BP & Sainsbury's

It'll be several years before I'm confident enough to get an electric car due to the serious lack of infrastructure for charging in this country, not everyone can easily charge at home or frequently enough. I've just bought another petrol car and I think my next will also be petrol in 6 plus years time.
My moan...
Squirrels dug dozens of holes in my lawn when I'm trying to get it to recover from the heatwave!

That's why I said those who can. In 18 months we've only had one issue and that was waiting maybe 20 mins for a charger to become free on one of our monthly trips from West Yorkshire to North Wales.
We're still on a ridiculously cheap night-time tariff of 4.69 p/kWh, but even when it goes up next July I'm confident it'll be well under 10 p/kWh. To put that in to context, I used to get about 300 miles out of a £60 tank of petrol - would cost much more now I'd wager. The car we've got now uses about 30 KW per 100 miles so even at 10 p/kWh that's £9 to fill it up. Well worth a few mins inconvenience once every 18 months.
We used to pay about £300/month petrol and £250/month gas and electric. Now we've had solar and batteries fitted we're paying £0/month petrol £140/month gas and electric and we're £1200 in credit.

If you ever get to visit Beamish open air museum they have a 1900s ‘zone’ which includes a garage, and they have a load of jerrycans stacked up - this was how you used to get your petrol in the early days.
50 years from now, people will look back on this era and it will seem like that to them. Quaint and a bit ramshackle and hit and miss. It is certainly the case that driving electric requires a little planning, especially if you’re going any great distance, and TBH if you are going long distance it is annoyingly expensive because the charger operators are absolutely gouging the market due to lack of local competition. But if circumstances permit, and you can plan for it, then electric motoring is cheap, clean and really quite fun.

Granted electric motoring seems much cheaper than petrol . . however if you can't afford an electric car and also don't have (again can't afford) solar panels and batteries the only alternative is the petrol car you already have . . and the bus when the car reaches end of life. 
looking long term, who the heck will need a car anyway when everything is bought and delivered online

Looked at this ........but change car (s) say £40000 per car install EV charger £ 400 to £1000. So somewhere around £80000 for two cars to be on the road . Won't spend that much on fuel if I lived to 200

I guess you don't need to buy a NEW one, £40K is alot, when I buy Petrol cars I aim for 3 years old.
Anyway I'm not touching an EV with a barge pole until I don't have any other option.
