Disney+ to Allow Ads on All Plans Following Changes Detailed in Updated Subscriber Agreement

Disney+ has altered its user agreement to clarify that ads will be allowed on all subscription tiers.

Subscribers took note of the updated terms when the company sent out emails about the changes last week (via Dexerto). An email sent to UK subscribers that was reviewed by IGN mentioned that Disney+ had "clarified that all service plans" can now include a range of promotional content before and after viewers stream movies and shows. You can read the message sent to subscribers below.

"Changes to your Disney+ Subscriber Agreement, include, in summary, the following (though we do encourage you to read the new Subscriber Agreement in full): - We’ve clarified that all Service Plans may include: (i) promotional content, (ii) sponsorships, and (iii) advertisements before/after playback of Content and in channels, live/as-live, special events, and any third-party services content."

Looks like competition fails when debt-loaded leveraged buy-outs brings the main players down to five or six*, then they can all ramp up their prices and introduce adverts…

*Disney buying Fox and Marvel, Paramount buying Warner Bros Discovery and HBO…

Disney+ has simply made explicit what all the SVODs are doing, i.e. ad-free on premium tiers means no ads during mid-roll but pre-roll and post-roll will have ads, promotions, etc. My beef with Prime Video is that it's the only SVOD where you have to pay to subscribe and pay again to avoid mid-roll ads.

Well, yes, but to be fair, Amazon Prime Video is thrown in free when you subscribe to the Prime free delivery service. I think most of us do that these days, don’t we?

When you subscribe to Amazon Prime you have to pay either a monthly (£8.99) or annual (£95) subscription fee which gives you both Prime Video and faster delivery. Amazon does offer free standard delivery to anyone without a Prime membership if they spend over a certain minimum threshold on eligible items, and I've taken advantage of that on occasions as I don't always have Prime membership, but this comes with a standard free Amazon account and includes zero streaming access.

Its not thrown in free, you are paying for it.
The old Prime (free delivery only) jumped in price when streaming was added.

The price increase was announced at the same time, OK. However, my recollection was that the payment was for the free deliveries, and Prime Video was thrown in free. I don’t recall having a choice NOT to have it, whether or not I ever used it.

I could be wrong, but that is my recollection. And of course, recollections can vary…..
