In England they hanged Witches not burnt them and in the Salem Witch trials they followed English Law and hanged them too . On the continent they burnt them

Whether the contact is correct or not is up to individual people to decide but, up until the EU decided otherwise, Parliament acknowledged that spirit communication does exist and most (all?) religions believe in an afterlife. The police have in the past used mediums to try and garner information.
I believe as i've seen/heard spirits for donkeys years, but accept it sounds so out of this world (because it is) so as to be preposterous, so it's understandable to be sceptical. It's also healthy to be so because some things can be explained and some people lie or are mistaken for various reasons.
About 50% of people believe in the afterlife as opposed to the other half who don't. Interestingly some who have encountered spirits don't believe in them, whilst some who haven't done do believe in them returning on visitation.

If ghosts exist why are we not over crowded with ghosts? all the ghost cats dogs fleas cows sheep and so on

Most people/animals tend to eventually move forward, but some (people) remain Earthbound due to fear of what will happen to them or return on visitation. None take up any physicsl space as such as they are comprised of energy.

No, it didn’t - It decriminalized mediumship and spiritualist practices, provided they were done in good faith. It made it a specific crime to fraudulently pretend to act as a medium or telepath to make money out of people.

Some people do believe in the afterlife, visitations, spirits (good and bad), voodoo, etc etc.
Possibly the same type of people who believe the Earth is flat, have seen (and been abducted by) Aliens, believe Fairies are real, and truly believe their particular God (and there are many) is listening to them.
To be fair to Richard though, there have been (and will be again) people who commit some horrific crimes that say the voices in their head told them to do it
