Streaming : Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Trelane is a TOS character who fans have long since retconned to be a member of the Q. Obviously he wasn’t written that way in the 1960s and his species wasn’t in mind when they created Q in the 1980s, and to be fair the SNW writers haven’t come out and said outright that this is what he is, although they’ve strongly hinted at it by having him speak to another unseen character voiced by John de Lancie the last time they used him.

I actually didn’t mind the idea of having him in the series but they just don’t seem to know how to work with the ideas they have.

I skipped a lot of the episode, really not very good.

It’s a problem with prequels trying to reference known ideas without tripping up over continuity.

In 'The Squire of Gothos’, the original series episode, it was certainly implied that Trelane knew little about humans or human history, as if he (it) had never truly interacted with humans before. And similarly we knew nothing about him. Yes here we are some ten years earlier showing otherwise. Of course maybe it can be hand-waved away by the Q wiping away all knowledge of these earlier encounters for some unspecified reason.

In the original series episode ‘Arena’, Kirk seemed generally surprised at seeing a Gorn, reminding himself that although the Gorn looks like a big lizard, it’s actually an intelligent being, a starship captain no less. It certainly seems that this is a first contact event. But yet SNW shows numerous earlier encounters with the Gorn, so Kirk should not have been taken aback. I do wonder if any of the subsequent few episodes of SNW will try to address this.

Much better … the ‘Mad Admiral’ trope is more Next Generation than original series (trivia - in the original series you never see anyone above the rank of Commodore. The first admiral is Kirk himself, in The Motion Picture), but they did it well, even if they maybe made it a bit obvious that he was going to cause trouble from the moment he walked on board. Maybe they just thought ‘we’re doing a Mad Admiral story, everyone knows when an Admiral shows up he causes trouble, what’s the point being subtle.’

I love the way they are using interactions between the Kirk brothers to fill out James T’s character and backstory. And if they don’t subsequently make a series set aboard Kirk’s enterprise with Paul Wesley as Kirk, it will be an utter travesty, and final proof that US TV execs know nothing.
