I actually didn’t mind the idea of having him in the series but they just don’t seem to know how to work with the ideas they have.

It’s a problem with prequels trying to reference known ideas without tripping up over continuity.
In 'The Squire of Gothos’, the original series episode, it was certainly implied that Trelane knew little about humans or human history, as if he (it) had never truly interacted with humans before. And similarly we knew nothing about him. Yes here we are some ten years earlier showing otherwise. Of course maybe it can be hand-waved away by the Q wiping away all knowledge of these earlier encounters for some unspecified reason.
In the original series episode ‘Arena’, Kirk seemed generally surprised at seeing a Gorn, reminding himself that although the Gorn looks like a big lizard, it’s actually an intelligent being, a starship captain no less. It certainly seems that this is a first contact event. But yet SNW shows numerous earlier encounters with the Gorn, so Kirk should not have been taken aback. I do wonder if any of the subsequent few episodes of SNW will try to address this.
