I think it's better if former MPs stay in Parliament; the experience alone is a good enough reason for them to be valuable, and they certainly should see out their terms rather than force a by-election.
I think how May handled it is a good example.
That said, if you're not going to do the job, then it is better to bite the bullet and resign. The alternative is someone like Sunak whose taken on several post-PM roles with American companies and doesn't attend Parliament much whilst still retaining the seat and the salary. It's two sides of a bad coin IMO.
