My dad was semi forced from what I can tell to change to 360 as they came to replace his hub so he could still use his landline as he's classed as vulnerable and has this telephone alerting system thing linked to a bracelet he wears.
Admittedly he doesn't have a lot recorded if anything but they are definitely putting more pressure on moving to 360
Action required: Your TV box needs an upgrade - was the subject of the email
Hello trickytree,
Your current Virgin TV box won’t be supported for much longer. This means it will lose functionality soon and eventually stop working altogether.
The good news is we can upgrade you to a new Virgin TV 360 box at no extra cost. But you'll need to take action to make this happen
|
You pay VM to support you. If their service stops working, then stop paying. Contract law is on your side.

Re: TV360 - pro and cons
I have just received yet another email "Your current Virgin TV box won’t be supported for much longer" it will interesting to see when it starts to show a date.
Not all that bothered about actually 'upgrading' to 360 but VM are currently "grating my carrot", as a lovey gentleman used to say.
We have 2 V6 boxes and I am currently seeing how my husband copes using the original TV mobile with the TV, already connected to a freeview aerial, that he uses every morning so that I can get rid of that V6 box. if he can copes then he can take his time dealing with the new VM 360 remote when we are forced to update our main TV.

Trouble is, that would also be an argument for maintaining 2G networks indefinitely for as long as there are 2G-only customers out there.

The service will keep working, all you need do is accept the offer of the free migration to a TV 360. And if you stop paying you'll likely find that that the debt results in a default notice being registered on your credit file, which stays for six years and impacts your ability to get other credit. And VM might even get a County Court Judgment (CCJ) issued against you.

That is questionable , as they could simply change his over, or more cheaply cancel contract . Would have a case around sales of goods, of cause, would be interesting to see a real legal opinion

Re: TV360 - pro and cons
You have a contract for a TV service, but that contract never specifies a particular box. If you choose not to migrate to a working box for free and stop paying in contravention of your contract, then you'll get into trouble as several have found to their cost.

I recently posted this in another thread, but relevant (imho) here…
I got my first TiVo from VM 15 years ago, and then got the V6 9 years ago* - I like the box, and SWMBO knows how to use it, so less hassle for me sort out any technology challenges/opportunities for her, but I’m realistic (having worked in the industry) in my expectations how long VM (or any company) can be expected to support "old" technology.
When "push comes to shove", I’ll do what I always do - look at options, compare costs vs ease of use, then make a decision.
*We now pay £1.96 more a month than we did then, so it pays to have a chat with VM when it’s contract end time…

However you are not changing anything, they simply need to change the software and give a new remote. not doing this would be a breach of contract on there side . Given your view I guess you would have to physically refuse to accept a new box . As I understand most refuseniks don't need one, the one they have can be changed remotely. Would love to see this brought to court, really great PR for them

They'll do what Sky did with the old Sky boxes by removing channels/functions/apps over a period of time to make the old boxes less useful.

I'll state the situation plainly.
If you grimly hang onto the V6, it will stop working when VM's licence to use its TiVo middleware expires (I suspect end of 2027).
If you refuse to keep paying for the TV service which you have contracted for and which is available with another box, you'll likely get a default notice being registered on your credit file and might even be hit by a CCJ.
