Yeah that didn't work well. Not as bad as the naked eye though.

To safely look directly at the sun, you need eclipse glasses that can reduce the intensity by roughly 100,000 times - in fact so dark that you can’t see anything else other than a dim glowing orb in the sky.

Also fun-fact, the retina at the back of the eye has no pain receptors, so you don’t know that it is being burnt and permanently damaged!

Re: Solar Eclipse 2026

I made a pinhole camera, just a pinhole in a piece of paper projecting the image onto the white frame of the double glazing.

We all saw the 1999 total eclipse from Chesil Beach, then seconds later a black cloud moved in... but our twins were too young to really understand what was happening.

I also saw a partial eclipse in 1985 in Cornwall.

I considered ordering 3 Glasses from Amazon but the delivery day was Friday! Lol

I thought it would get far darker than it actually did.

You might think so, if the sun is 90% occulted (covered) as it was in London, then you might expect it to be really dim. The thing is though, that the sun is so, so bright, that even 10-20% of the light getting through doesn’t make a massive difference.

For that, you need a total eclipse when it really does go dark. Alas the next one visible from the UK will occur on Sept. 23rd 2090.

That explains why it didn't get really dark here too. It was just like the sun had gone in and never came back out until it started getting dark at the usual time.
