Because of Brexit - before Brexit, under the Dublin regulation, we could send them back to France...
(and they didn't try coming, because of......
the Dublin regulation!)
This Dublin regulation? For 2024, Germany had a net figure of 1,236 immigrants leaving for other EU countries, out of 74,561 requests by Germany for them to be dealt with elsewhere. If we were in the EU, we would have to accept loads more. Under the EU/EEA rules for 2018, we may have been able to send 209 back to the EU, but had to accept 1,215. That's six in, one out under the previous returns agreement.
Previously they were arriving by lorry, so could easily disappear and didn't need to claim asylum. Crossing the channel by boat and remaining undetected is a bit more difficult, so they automatically have to claim asylum there and then.

The first train displaying Great British Railways (GBR) branding has been unveiled.
Govia Thameslink Railway
Services run by GTR's other operators – Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express – will also enter public ownership on 31 May.
They will join West Midlands Trains, Greater Anglia, c2c, Northern, TransPennine Express, Southeastern, LNER and South Western in being managed by DfT Operator Limited.
The public ownership programme is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Re: Starmer’s chronicles
The wretched government have spent their two years complaining about the Tories having "hollowed out" the armed forces. And then spent the tax money needed to reverse that on welfare.
The height of irresponsibility. Cards still being played by that liar Starmer.
We can't keep public transport and the NHS working, schools and education in general has fallen into the pit of despair, and the police are damned if they do, damned if they don't.
Not sure if we had far greater armed forces we could arm them with anything better than small rainbow flags with 'welcome' printed across the middle.

The sooner we get Burnham into No 10 the better on the basis that he can't be any worse!
Unfortunately, Starmer's regime seems to have adopted its Conservative predecessors' definitions of "strong and stable" rather than what you and I think this term means.
It's a real shame that the reduction in GDP came when we most needed it to increase defence spending.
