Because of Brexit - before Brexit, under the Dublin regulation, we could send them back to France...
(and they didn't try coming, because of......
the Dublin regulation!)
This Dublin regulation? For 2024, Germany had a net figure of 1,236 immigrants leaving for other EU countries, out of 74,561 requests by Germany for them to be dealt with elsewhere. If we were in the EU, we would have to accept loads more. Under the EU/EEA rules for 2018, we may have been able to send 209 back to the EU, but had to accept 1,215. That's six in, one out under the previous returns agreement.
Previously they were arriving by lorry, so could easily disappear and didn't need to claim asylum. Crossing the channel by boat and remaining undetected is a bit more difficult, so they automatically have to claim asylum there and then.
