General : Streaming - a very vulnerable future...

Had my first interweb outage today since the phone was switched to VOIP. Of course, no phoneline, before it would have been an independent unaffected line.

If my TV was streaming, then that too would have been lost. Imagine the interweb going down, or being oversubscribed, during the World Cup Final. Or a vulnerable person desperately needing their landline.

I'll be holding on to coaxial cable tv and Freeview as long as possible, always good to have an alternative, but they are looking close down those next.

What are called 'upgrades', are really just cheaper more profitable for providers, and leaves the punters far more vulnetable to losing all services.

"All your eggs in one basket...", never a good thing.

Yes always good to have a backup plan. Ironically by recently parting company with VM I've now lost my backup BB connection so might look into the possibility of getting a second FTTP service although there are mixed opinions as to whether this is possible.

I pay £22 per month to BT standard FTTC the router is directly connected to my wifi 6 Mesh system and takes care of all my wireless network on the Mesh solely.
I pay £9.98 to lebara for an unlimited 5G data sim which is in my 5G unlocked router and is cabled to a switch and takes care of my PCs

If 5G goes down or slow I connect wirelessly to the BT network and if BT goes down I disconnect the BT router from the Mesh plug the 5G router into it reboot and the Mesh network is now run off the 5G so got good contingency. Power goes off of course it is all mobile data on my phone

well yes but I was just showing you do not have to put them all in the same bag. I know BT and EE offer a 5G Automatic back up option for those that feel they need it . Although the 90 year old could be given one of the specific mobile phones that would suit . TTFone for example offer some for the less tech abled

They could try it, but if they were anything like my Mum they'd confuse it with the tv remote/ landline phone/any other remote control. We'll could all be in a similar situation one day.

Having all your eggs in one basket has always (well usually) been seen as a bit of a risk, the probability that it could well be AI holding the basket makes it more so

you say that but we managed well up until there was more options. There was a time in my 20s that I had to walk to a phone box because the house I was sharing had no phone

Thinking everything is depending on one connection is daft is daft because the land line was the only connection we had for those here most of our lives

Think I got my first mobile and internet around the same time late 90s before then I managed on a comtel phone and before I moved to where I am now I managed on no connection at all imagine that

Set them up a google phone tell them to simply say "Ok Google" "Call/Text Mr k"

The phone will will then do it for them not the remote control or the other remote control just the phone

You can set up an app so when you send them a text it reads it out loud and as it will say the callers name. A lot of accessibility options on mobiles nowadays . A hell of a lot more than on any landline phone I seen
