It doesn’t matter how many people there are in a particular religious or ethnic group. Europe still has living memory of what happens when persecution of such a group is allowed to go on. In the last couple of months we’ve had murder, attempted murder, premises vandalised, vehicles torched … and not all in one corner of London either, it’s occurring in various places. Add to that the credible evidence, being reported today, that bad actors (i.e. Iran) are inciting and possibly even facilitating it, and we very much are into emergency territory. We can’t cede the streets to lawlessness, no matter who the victims are.

Its not a "National Emergency", not by any means.

Hitler, specifically in this case, because the victims are Jews. Surely you can see the parallel. A great many Germans in the 1930s had no particular animosity towards Jews and went along with it because it was far easier to pile on to a minority than to defend them. But sure, it doesn’t have to be Hitler - Jews have had a particular problem with religious/ethnic persecution in Europe for centuries. That’s why ‘antisemitism’ has its own name. It’s supremely ugly wherever such pogroms flare up, and it’s sickening that it should be happening here and now.

Two women standing as Green party candidates in the local elections have been arrested over alleged antisemitic social media posts.

The women, running in seats for Lambeth council, south London, were arrested by the Metropolitan police on Thursday morning.

The Green party declined to comment, citing the ongoing police inquiry, but the women are understood to be Saiqa Ali, a Lambeth Green candidate for Streatham St Leonard’s ward, and Sabine Mairey, who was standing in Lambeth’s Clapham Town.

The Met said in a statement: “Police have arrested two women, aged 57 and 54, on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred online, an offence under section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986. They remain in police custody.

“The arrests follow an investigation launched after concerns were reported to police on Tuesday 21 April about antisemitic material that had been posted online.”

Ali’s Instagram account is set to private but screenshots indicated she had posted an image of an armed man wearing a headband of the banned Islamist group Hamas along with the slogan: “Resistance is freedom”.

Another screenshot indicated that Mairey had shared a post which included the text: “Ramming a synagogue isn’t antisemitism. It’s revenge.”

One of Reform’s candidates is Ben Rowe, who is standing in the Ham ward of Plymouth. He urged protesters throwing bricks at police defending a mosque to “get rid of that filthy building” during the 2024 Southport riots.

Commenting beneath a YouTube video in February, Rowe accused “the Jews” of “creating division by forcing other races on our societies”. He elsewhere described immigrants to the UK “breeding like rats”, posted blackface memes and labelled Islam “a cancer”.

Raja posted a 23-minute video on his TikTok account of him taking part in a demonstration against Israeli attacks on Gaza in June 2024, captioned: “I led a protest in Leeds today [in] solidarity with the people of Palestine.”

In the video, the Reform candidate is seen at the front of the march with a Workers Party sign reading: “For Britain, for Gaza”. Raja chanted slogans including “end apartheid”, “Israel is a terrorist state” and “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform, has described “from the river to the sea” as a “hate slogan” which calls for “the abolition of the state of Israel and, frankly, the eradication of the Jewish people that live there as well”.

Even if it was, the media (and politicians) will be following a different 'incident' next week. There's so much crap going on in the UK that they never get a minute to sort any of it.
