Yes, clearly someone’s managed to get through to him and convince him this was an especially stupid piece of social media trolling, even by his low standards. The casual, implausible lie by way of explanation is a classic of the genre. It’s brazen, and contemptuous of his voter base who, you have to assume, are the only ones they can expect to be fooled by it.

I doubt that I've confused you! I suppose you're trying to be literal about the meaning of a Ponzi scheme.
In this case, the Pope (and/or his predecessors) is/are the "first investor" and the subscribing flock are the existing/renewable flock. Then there is whatever the Catholic church invests in so as to grow its riches.
Generally, peops know what I mean.
The CoE is another such Ponzi scheme - perhaps even more so.

You would be mistaken - I was confused, and as a (lapsed) Catholic, I had never heard of the RC Church (or indeed any religion) described this way before…
