General : Netflix to buy Warner Bros film and streaming businesses

Netflix has agreed to buy the film and streaming businesses of Warner Bros Discovery in major Hollywood deal worth $72bn (£54bn).

The streaming giant had emerged as the top bidder for Warner Bros ahead of rivals Comcast and Paramount Skydance after a drawn-out battle.

Warner Bros owns franchises including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, and the streaming service HBO Max.

The takeover is set to lead to a radical reshaping of the US film and media industry, but analysts have warned that it could face resistance from competition authorities

HBO produce a lot of good shows, not sure I like the idea of them being owned by Netflix.

It’ll merge Netflix content with HBO Max including Discovery+content. Fewer streamers should be good for consumers. We can expect Netflix to become more expensive, but hopefully cheaper than paying for separate streamers.

This is almost inevitably going to lead to Netflix’s competitors seeking to merge with other streamers.

My memory is not as good as it used to be but l do remember someone telling us that the world of streaming would be cheaper for people to subscribe to, well here we are several years later and prices have doubled if not tripled to subscribe to the many streamers out there..

The comparison was with TV channels, Den. Ditch those and just take the streamers you want, and it works out cheaper.

Everyone knows that a NOW subscription is cheaper than the bundles of channels on Sky, for example.

It is also relevant to point out that you don't have to subscribe to every streamer all at once. You could have Apple+ one month and Netflix the next. You can't do that with TV channels.

Sky Sports is cheaper for me on Sky Q than on NOW (cheaper even than the £28 a month for 6 months special offer that NOW are doing atm).

Those who play the cancellation game get it as cheap as £19.99. Think you'd have to pay extra for Boost (even if discounted) if the picture quality isn't good enough for your requirements though.

There's been media coverage saying that this is risky as:

- It's illegal so you could get involved in legalities and fined etc.

- It funds terrible crimes like drugs, people trafficking etc.

- Your data could be stolen as a lot have viruses on them and people have lost thousands.

Not sure if this is correct or is scaremongering to try & put people off.
