Something strange

Whenever I reboot, Linux Mint forgets my wallpaper and reverts to its default. I found the folder where it lives (/usr/share/backgrounds/linuxmint), opened it as root, put my wallpaper (renamed to default_background) there, and put every other wallpaper into a folder. In effect my wallpaper is the only file in there, so Mint should display it.

It doesn't. The default wallpaper is still displayed.

I'm new to Linux (not to Unix, but it's been decades since I wrote a script!). What am I missing? Even Win 11 can do better than this.

The Internet is less than helpful. Everything I've tried so far is temporary - every reboot, the default is back

I've just tried deleting the folder, so default_background.jpg is the only file in there - and the default still appears!

- no, it doesn't; Mint now seems to have decided, "Oh, that's what the user wants!" and is now displaying it after a reboot. Colour me even more confused, but it's what I want, so I'm calling it a win!

Something else: I specified British spellings when I installed Mint, but Firefox highlights, e.g., "colour" as misspelled, and "color" as OK.

Is this Firefox-specific? I'll call up a file in LibreOffice Writer and see...

Hmm. No, "colour" is not highlighted as misspelled. Idea: check Firefox settings...

- and the default is English (GB). So why is it highlighted as misspelled when, in the UK, this is not incorrect?

Or - daft idea - is Cable Forum's editor getting it wrong?

I wouldn't worry too much about 'incorrect' spelling, almost everything defaults to English(US). If I know the word is correct in English(UK) I ignore the robot telling me it's wrong.

The other thing is, many who will read what you write won't have a clue as to whether the spelling is correct or not, and if they do think 'oh that looks strange' . . the usual excuse is 'bloody auto correct'

True (he says, whilst laughing!), I usually ignore spell checking unless I have misspelled something owing to a typo (which it usually, all too often, is!). I was an excellent speller even in primary school - in fact it used to get me singled out for extra attention; at a parents' evening a teacher said it was lovely to hear me reading and spelling. One said, when I was 4, she was certain I'd pass the 11-Plus - which I did.

This was despite my terrible handwriting, which a French teacher in grammar school likened to the footprints of a spider which had fallen into an inkwell after having had too much of whatever spiders have on a night out. I didn't argue, a) because I was too busy laughing (I still do when I remember it), and b) because, alas, he was right. It is terrible. A frequent complaint at parents' evenings was "superb work - if only the handwriting wasn't so atrocious!"

But my O-Levels were my revenge: I was warned that if the papers weren't up to scratch, they'd be trashed.

Technical Drawing (after a very shaky 3rd year start) - C

Oh, and History - E, but I was so bored when, in the 4th year, we started on industrial history rather than kings, queens, battles etc, I really wasn't bothered.

I've long since realised that a few of us brighter ones were receiving extra, such as spelling, e.g., chrysanthemum, precisely because we were bright. <sarcasm>This was back in the days when teachers used to encourage bright pupils.</sarcasm>

Thankfully I retained my spelling skills even after the stroke. It's memory where I fall down nowadays.

Ah. It's a Firefox issue, then. But I feel it shouldn't highlight British spelling when its default is set to GB. Oh well.

Agree on the memory thing.

Go into the kitchen and make a cup of coffee, then walk back into the living room with the spoon in hand and no cup.

Slowly struggle upstairs, get to the top and can't remember why you came up.

Actually remember the wife's orders to put some washing in while she's out . . . ten minutes later notice the small plastic ball of wash liquid sitting staring at you from the worktop above the washing machine.

I could go on . . .
