Newcastle win the league cup!
Yep i'm sad adding this thread but a truly astonishing day for me as a Newcastle supporter.
I'm getting old now and i was born in Liverpool to a mum from Liverpool and a Dad from Newcastle. They'd met in Manchester in college and flipped a coin on whether to go to Newcastle or Liverpool to live. (they needed to be near a set of grandparents for any future babysitting as they planned to have kids)
Liverpool won and the rest is history. However as is known most boys will follow the football team of their father and so that was what happened. Boys and girls in my childhood would be running around in their liverpool or everton shirts meanwhile i'd be wearing my McEwans lager newcastle top.
Thankfully those were good days for Newcastle with Cole, Beardsley, Ferdinand, Ginola, Shearer and several near misses to the league. I still blame us buying Asprilla and changing our set up which blew us the title in 95/96 as much of a legend Asprilla was.
When we had the Mike Ashley era and that entire bloody awful era. My dad then passed away, the year before we got relegated, at the age of 58. We then spent a fun year in the championship (it was fun because we got promoted) before improving in the league slowly before getting mike ashley'd and not pushing on then we finished 5th. Which then led to another relegation a few years later...
When we have the Saudi takeover. A lot of people suddenly against foreign take overs. Yep Saudi are well known for the brutal murder of a journalist but Qatar and UAE are known for many human rights abuses and its rarely mentioned. Roman abramovich became a billionaire after seizing state assets after the fall of the soviet union and him and his chums moving money out of the country whilst the populace struggled to feed themselves properly.
But lets move on we got rid of Ashley but immediately the drawbridge was pulled up with more strict PSR rules enforced to prevent any "quick victories" and prevent another chelsea and man city.
In the all time football league table Newcastle are just behind tottenham, man city and chelsea even though for the past 15 odd years we've been fighting relegation or in the championship which sort of tells you the whole "newcastle arent a big club" accusations.
But today anyway a league cup win. My dad would have been 5 years old then we last won a domestic cup and 19 years old then we last won any sort of trophy.
Happy days. Hopefully it wont be so long till our next trophy!
