Very true as being a former DJ the earlier decades were so much more varied musically then they are now.

Very true. I watched the 1978 Christmas Day edition of Top of the Pops on BBC4 last night and knew every track and liked most of them.

Thought they'd kept it going after it was axed as a special? when did that end?

The last one was in 2021.
They still do an end of year review, just not on Christmas Day (or BBC1) anymore.
This year its on BBC2, on December 27th.
