Angry Something weird is going on

I keep getting a popup from HP Smart UAC, asking me if I want it to make changes to my Windows 11 system, i.e. installing. I always click 'no'.

I do not have an HP printer installed. Never did. I have never even owned a printer from HP. I search for 'hp' on my system and get no results (oops, I didn't search from top level, i.e. C: - trying that now). So how am I getting this popup? The advice I found so far suggests deleting certain files - which I don't have! Or disabling a service - one which isn't running!

Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is to wait until it happens again, run Task Manager to see what's running and disable it!

Re: Something weird is going on

Perhaps run Malwarebytes and an online virus scan
Check start up see if anything there might have crept in with another install and is trying to install the program. Stop everything that isnt MS, Audio/Video driver related or virus scanner stuff

Re: Something weird is going on

I have Norton; it didn't find anything. I'll try that.

Re: Something weird is going on

Nope, that didn't find anything virus-related. Apparently I'm not the only one; many Windows 10 & 11 users have reported it - Micro$oft are supposedly doing something about it.

This goes back to the middle of last year. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...a-f65c433f28f4

But if you have never had this kit of its drivers, I would be very wary of clicking on it.

Re: Something weird is going on

It's likely to be something in the registry that shouldn't be there.

However don't edit the registry unless you really know what you're doing and always back it up.

Doesn't hurt to take a look with regedit.exe ( I think this is in system32 directory) search function and see if there's any related keys.

Re: Something weird is going on

Microsoft have held up their hand to including a HP Smart printer tool in Windows 11 23H2!
Causing printer name and icons to be changed.

Re: Something weird is going on

The only thing showing is Microsoft Print To PDF. But there's an option: 'Allow Windows to manage my default printer'. I've selected Off on principle.

I searched for 'HP' in the Registry. A key came up that isn't related and where 'HP' doesn't appear anywhere.

Note my signature. IMO Windows 11 is not an improvement on 10 - or even 8. Hell, even Windows 98 and 2000 did better than this.

Re: Something weird is going on

The later article advised that Microsoft has issued a 'Metadata Troubleshooter Tool December 2023' to fix the problem.
www.snipca.com/48756 and click download.
Goes on to include further instructions.
