I think Hunt should remain Chancellor. He is working on the new budget, be crazy to move to yet another one days before it's presented.

Re: Liz Truss Resigns [Who'll be the next Prime Minister?]

Looks like if it's Boris Johnson then Tory MPs might try to kill off the privileges committee so that it doesn't cause an issue if he is found to have lied to Parliament.

Understand some MPs have been privately talking (very informally) about ways to possibly kill off the privileges committee to stop it causing trouble for Boris Johnson

If they select BJ again, then the Tory Party will have officially made the transition from a Political Paty to a Cult. This will be they final day in the sun for a long time so they will try and make the most of it. Watch out for the accelerated erosion of our democratic & workers' rights and rollback of standards across the board to allow their backers to make the most money before they are dumped from office.

I suspect the Government would collapse if he’s picked.

There is quite a group of Tory MPs who will be extremely angry if that is the case.

Defections are a possibility as well.

Personally l think he is doomed to fail in his attempt to become Conservative party leader again.

Guido Fawkes is updating his candidates/backers spreadsheet in real time. It’s worth occasionally checking at https://order-order.com/2022/10/21/w...s-up-to-boris/

At time of posting, it’s Sunak 53, Boris 52, Mordaunt 19.

The Tories have a problem. The public overwhelmingly voted for Johnson (I know we don't have a presidential system but it's a fact).

Even though he returned the biggest Tory majority in whenever, many in the party just didn't want him.

Even after partygate, and all the other scandals, he was/is still popular and still had the mandate from the electorate.

So they get rid of him, install Truss who has no mandate, rips up the fragile alliance with the red wall and royally screws everything up.

Whoever is appointed, if it's not Johnson, they need to bring him in and commit to try and deliver his 2019 manifesto (but there is precious little time)

He isn't that popular. He had dire approval ratings when he left. But he is popular with the Tory base which is why he'll probably win.

I agree though he is the easiest answer to the calls for an election.

I'm hoping that the Boris backers have all come out and very few remain.

The list doesn’t claim to be a record of public declarations - only verified ones. Verification can come from nefarious grasses and other third parties, not only from the individual named.

The spreadsheet includes this, in a green box on the right:
Quote:
Anonymous MPs: Whips, party board members and 1922 chairmen who have to remain publicly neutral though have a vote. Guido has verified all these names to be true.
Whittaker isn’t actually saying he isn’t backing Boris, he’s saying he hasn’t told Guido that. He appears to be asking for an apology for being ‘outed’ on the basis that he’s on the committee so should be publicly neutral. I doubt he’ll get one - Guido hasn’t broken the editors code. Sometimes you can’t get a comment from the subject of an article, and there’s no law that says you have to (though of course you should try).

The Boris backers represent the Utterly Tone Deaf Group of Tory MPs, chairman the Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg MP.

52 of them is astonishingly bad in itself, if it gets anywhere near 100 you would have to wonder whether they’re even fully functioning members of the human race.

If it comes down to back Boris or lose the next election and their jobs ,he'll become very popular, i think if rishi gets in many will desert the party.

Re: Liz Truss Resigns [Who'll be the next Prime Minister?]

Meanwhile, Chris Mathieson (Lab, Chester) has got a serious slap from the standards watchdog for inviting a member of his staff on a dirty weekend (she did not appreciate his advances). His suspension is long enough for a recall petition to be got up, and while the Tories would be mad to actually try that, he has apparently forced the issue for himself and resigned. So we are in for a by election in a seat that Labour held in 2019 with a 6,000 majority over Con, and which is marginal enough that Con has itself held in the past (Giles Brandreth was MP there).

I wonder how many of the 20,000 Tory votes will still be there when the election occurs.

I think almost any seat Labour managed to hold in 2019 is unlikely to be a marginal next time around.
