There’s not a single policy or set of policies that can turn it round for her.

You’re correct, what she’s done is incompetence on a scale that ought to be impossible at the hands of someone who has managed to attain such high office. That’s not what Den said though, which was basically a boilerplate objection to Tory government, that just doesn’t stand up to scrutiny in the present circumstances. A great many Tory parliamentarians (possibly a majority of them) wouldn’t have made the moves she has. Most of them didn’t even want her to get the job.

The fact that no one on this forum is defending her anymore tells us all we need to know.

In a interview with GB News polling expert John Curtice said that historical precedent means the Conservative party cannot win the next election, and that the challenge facing the government was the combination of both Black Wednesday and the 1976 crisis when the Labour government was forced to seek an IMF bailout.

The nearest modern polling equivalent is the Tory wipeout of 1997. Then, however, Blair and Brown inherited a good and improving economy. If and when Labour enter office, even if that’s not til 2024 and things have turned a corner, they aren’t going to benefit from anything like as rosy.

Liz Truss held crunch talks with Graham Brady before appearing stony-faced in front of MPs

Honoured that you should seek my thoughts.

She's a naffing disaster - both for the country and her previously fine (sort of) party.

But, the parliamentary party is tactically split. They are united in their disgust at Truss but divided on what it looks like if we have yet another PM.

For my part, it's necessary to have another PM (that isn't Starmer or Boris) if only to see us sensibly out to the next election (and defeat) without further wrecking the UK.

Always good to get people’s thoughts !!

So if the party is split could a ‘unity’ ticket even work ?

It would have to be a unity ticket if there were to be any chance of governmental stability.

It will be difficult, though. The only unity I can see, and that is as a total layman, is that the parliamentary party should agree rules that allow no more than three candidates, one nominated by each faction and a short, sharp MP vote. All over in a couple of days. This would depend on Truss' resignation which could be orchestrated by the appropriate number of boos!

If only ....

Yeah, that might go. It's already something they've suggested they might cut after the next election and it's such an expense they'll be tempted. If only because they've cut elsewhere so much.

And realistically how does this play out ? GE? Truss somehow clings on ? The party manages to unite ?
