What exactly did anyone expect them to do. Hong Kong was “returned” to China as per the agreement. What China does with it after that is their business.

Beijing’s imposition of new rules disqualifying opposition legislators in Hong Kong constitutes a breach of legally binding international commitments, the UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, has said.

Raab said the move represented a “clear breach” of the Sino-British joint declaration, which was supposed to guarantee Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy under Chinese rule.

In a statement, Raab said the UK would work with allies to hold the Chinese government to its obligations under international law.

“China has once again broken its promises and undermined Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy,” said Raab.

China is just flexing, the issue is if it did turn into a "Ukraine" would the US have to go it alone or would they have the support of NATO? Would the US even bother to get involved?

It’s China, anyone that thought they’d stick to that and not ignore it when it suits are being very naive.

It their sovereign territory and they won’t have a third party dictate to them what they can do on it.

We've not got as bad as dishonouring international agreements as China, but I agree we're heading in that direction. I'm nonetheless hopeful that we will prove more sensible and not go down that route.
