Re: Russia has invaded Ukraine
It would appear the tide is atarting to turn in Russia.
Quote:
There is a notable mood shift in Russia, as darkness sets over its economy and the invasion of Ukraine hits major problems. While the beginning of President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale war against Ukraine was greeted with cheers, clapping, and demands of Champagne in the studio, the reality sobered up even the most pro-Kremlin pundits and experts on Russian state television.
The ugly truth about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is slipping through the cracks, despite the government’s authoritarian attempts to control the narrative...
...State TV pundit Karen Shakhnazarov pointed out: “The war in Ukraine paints a frightening picture, it has a very oppressive influence on our society. Ukraine, whichever way you see it, is something with which Russia has thousands of human links. The suffering of one group of innocents does not compensate for the suffering of other innocent people... I don’t see the probability of denazification of such an enormous country. We would need to bring in 1.5 million soldiers to control all of it. At the same time, I don’t see any political power that would consolidate the Ukrainian society in a pro-Russian direction... Those who talked of their mass attraction to Russia obviously didn’t see things the way they are. The most important thing in this scenario is to stop our military action. Others will say that sanctions will remain. Yes, they will remain, but in my opinion discontinuing the active phase of a military operation is very important.”

But, amusingly enough, the Wagner PMC (Private Military Company, mercenaries) that Putin uses for his dirty work in Syria, and now Ukraine, is run by a neo-Nazi, Dmitry Utkin - they were the ones who tried to assassinate (twice) President Zelenskyy.

Calling someone else’s government a bunch of Nazis is a good way of riling up your base and winning support for your own basically Nazi plans to annexe a sovereign neighbour if you’re in Russia, where the Nazi invasion is a painful memory, and the USSR’s defeat of it a very proud one.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense just published a promotional video offering each Russian pilot a reward if they defect to #Ukraine with their aircraft.
USD 1 million per aircraft and USD 500,000 per helicopter.

The Russian winter defeated the Nazis.
You'd think they'd have learnt from history that trying to expand your empire never ends up well. They've haven't got enough troops to control Ukraine even if they do 'succeed'. It's a big place and they're not welcome.

Re: Russia has invaded Ukraine
Apparently, the maternity & children's hospital that was bombed by the Russians because it was full of militia and mercenaries (the explanation given by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov) was in fact bombed by the Ukrainians as a false-flag operation (the explanation given by the Russian Defence Ministry)…
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe...ws-2022-03-10/
Quote:
The Defence Ministry later denied having bombed the hospital, accusing Ukraine of staging the incident. It said Russian forces at the time had been respecting an agreement to hold fire to allow the evacuation of civilians.
"Russian aviation carried out absolutely no strikes on ground targets in the area," spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.
"The alleged air strike was completely a staged provocation... that can deceive the Western public but not an expert."
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attacked what he called "pathetic shouting about so-called atrocities by the Russian armed forces".
He told reporters after meeting Ukraine's foreign minister in Turkey that the hospital building had for days been under the control of ultra-radical Ukrainian forces who had emptied out the doctors and patients.

The Red Army kept the Nazis engaged in Stalingrad for five months, with proper insurgent guerrilla warfare, all whilst they were building up their own major offensive to leap frog the German lines and encircle the Germans engaged in the Battle of Stalingrad.
This offensive would ultimately be the one to go all the way to Berlin.
The Germans were poorly supplied and equipped for A prolonged Russian winter.
The Red Army defeated the Nazis, not the weather. I know you were not being flippant as what you posted is the usual trope, but the Red Army kept the Germans there, in order for the weather to make a difference.

The Russians have long understood that their topography and climate are key to their defence, and they have used it, quite deliberately, to great advantage.
Napoleon, unlike Hitler, got all the way to Moscow, but the nation’s leadership evacuated the city and burned it down, then waited for the French to get too cold and hungry to stay any longer. In the event Napoleon waited too long for a Russian delegation to come and face him. By the time he and his army tried to retreat, they were hungry, demoralised and the weather was turning against them.
