Land Registry records solved it in the end. Side A had been occupying around 6ft of side B's garden.

Boundary is clearly marked as ours to maintain, the old posts were the same side

How did that solve it ?
Who erected the fence, A or B ?
Did they decide it was was Side B's fence ?

The boundary line was marked and side A had to replace the fence after another tribunal, with the posts on their side.

Re: Broken fence posts removal
When we bought our house, both neighbours said the side fences were our responsibility.
My reply was "fine, no problem. I'll replace them with what I want and the good side will be facing us"
And that's how it went, and still is.
One of the idiots later actually fastened some tall bushy type of flowery things to his side of the fence (to keep them upright I guess) and when we replaced the rotting panels the plants came up too.

This is how the Land Registry solves fencing disputes.

Your fence, so the neighbours are committing criminal damage if they fasten anything to it. You should have pointed out to them the panels were rotting because of their actions and asked them to cough up!

Much easier to just rip the plants up as the fence panels came out. If said neighbour wanted to complain I wasn't stopping him . . anyway, the 'flora' didn't get replaced so maybe he got the point
