Original BSG is of its time, and I enjoy watching it, but for me it's a little too panto. There is no way they could have brought BSG back if all they were going to do was continue the story a la Star Trek.
The new version is a 're-imagining', taking the original premise and totally rebuilding from scratch. Personally I find it to be absolutely superb, but I do love a good story-driven drama and the quality of the writing in the new BSG has been, IMHO, almost uniformly excellent.
The science of it makes more sense as well. I was watching it the other week and trying to put my finger on what it was that was different about the way the spacecraft move in this new series compared to the original. Then I realised - the Vipers in the original BSG bank and turn as if they are flying in an atmosphere, which of course they aren't. The new series has a far more realistic look to it (and it makes for some superb dogfight sequences as well - I don't agree that there's not enough action. There's plenty, although as I said the series is story driven, not effects-led).

Well said - agree completely.
I feel the same way as you do sir_drinks_alot, only vice versa, i hated the original series - it seemed a bit camp / cheesy and OTT, whereas the new one is about the best SCI-FI i have seen in years...

I should have paid more attention to the messages in here, but memories of the old series came flooding back and the lack of decent trailers (or at least, any that I saw) on Sky that would imply it was something other than naff didn't inspire me to check it out until a friend was very complimentary about it.
I've only seen the most recent three episodes and whilst the first couple were, frankly, a bit cliche, the last one was pretty good.
The problem I can see is that whilst there's lots of questions being asked and hints at deeper subtleties, series like that tend to fall apart once they've resolved those elements and tend to descend back into space opera cliche.
Still, I'll keep watching for now.

Have to disagree with you about it being the Best SF for years.Babylon 5 makes this series look dated.
I bet it gets cancelled before anything gets resolved as well, as the days of more than one long running SF series have gone.So many have fallen by the way in the last few years.I can't be a*rsed to expend any time trying to get into it when it's more than likely to get axed in a couple of seasons.

Considering the titles of the last 2 episodes I wouldn't be at all surprised.

It is a great shame there have been a few series recently that i've got into just to see them axed

Re: Battlestar Galactica
I really would be gutted if that happened - i still honestly feel its the best SCI-FI in a long time. I liked Babylon 5 and it was really good and probably better than ST:TNG as a whole as it went downhill after season 3 - but this is better so far.
Funny - i've liked Star Trek for a long time but until i saw this i hadnt realised how crap it had become, Startgate is not bad and atlantis is promising but this blows them all away IMO.
Never enjoyed Sci-Fi so much since they introduced the Borg in Next Gen - saying that - they managed to screw that up after about 1 season.

Re: Battlestar Galactica
I keep wondering about Dr Baltar though, is he a Cylon or not? My money has to be on him being a Cylon, he knows Boomer is a Cylon and has now said that all the Cylon tests will come back as clear. Also, he keeps seeing that woman all the time (no complaints though ) - but how come no other cylons can see her or have a "companion" of their own, then he knows Boomer is a Cylon and has now said that all the tests will come back as clear - however i still expect a twist there - why i dont know.
POSSIBLE SPOLER!!! (But complete guess on my part - Highlight line below to see)
(Unless he's the leader of the Cylons or something - did that not happen in the original series?)
Plus Six can pick stuff up - like in the lab when there testing the blood samples there is one scene where she has it in her hand - so its like she's there - but not.
And whats the purpose of Helo on Caprica - wheres that going there?

Well without giving too much away I would say that given what happened in the latest episode it is showing another layer in the cylon/human mind.

You mean the fact that Boomer (on caprica) has well, you know, changed her mind...
