My Dad was on HMS Sheffield and as many of us know we know what happened there.

Re: Prince Philip has Died R.I.P

Trying to outrun an Exocet while flying a helicopter seems a tad dangerous, or was it simply deploying a 'chaff' like decoy to screw its radar when (if) it was spotted incoming?

neither of which I'd fancy as a job though

Most Exocets fired off by Argentina during the war were the slower land-based variant. You still wouldn't want to get directly in the path of one, but they weren't quite the super-weapon popular imagination assumes them to be.

Prince Andrew's helicopter was sent out to act as a picket, not a decoy. I was glued to the TV all the way through and was working in Southampton when the fleet set sail and watched that.

Re: Prince Philip has Died R.I.P

Picket, Decoy, whatever. Still lots of nasty chunks of fast moving metal out there to hurt you.

I almost joined RAF aged 16 . . Airframe Technician if I recall. Still one of my biggest mistakes turning that down I reckon.

Heard on the radio earlier that the visually impaired had suffered quite badly due to all the websites that went into mourning for the Duke, network rail in particular came in for criticism, quite deservedly so imo to, they should have known better

May I remind everyone that this is a RIP thread dedicated to Prince Philip and not a royal chat/falklands and whatever thread.

He did both, as well as Air-Sea Rescue.

I was on stand-by to be called up in the Reserve, as I had not long left the RAF.

One of his regular roles was to act as a decoy to draw away incoming Exocet missiles from HMS Invincible by confusing their guidance system.

New royal yacht named after Prince Philip to be 'commissioned within weeks', costing as much as £200m

The Daily Telegraph reports that the new yacht will be announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson "within weeks".

The cost of building the vessel could be as much as £200m, with MPs calling for the ship to be built in the UK.

Downing Street has not denied the reports, with a spokesperson saying: "The prime minister has an exciting vision for shipbuilding in this country and is committed to making the UK a shipbuilding superpower.

"We are always looking for new ways to promote global Britain around the world, driving investment back to the UK and delivering value for money for the British people."

Re: Prince Philip has Died R.I.P

Failing to replace Britannia was a typically mean-spirited, myopic decision of Tony Blair’s New Labour project. The former royal yacht was an ambassador in itself and a potent soft power weapon promoting Britain around the world. A replacement is long overdue.

But does the Queen really want a new Royal Yacht?

Re: Prince Philip has Died R.I.P

I don’t imagine there’s much chance of her ever sailing on it. But Britannia was mostly used for things other than floating holidays for the royal family. Its royal association is what made it such a useful diplomatic tool, especially when it came to promoting British business and other interests overseas.
