Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Yet more frustration. The World Cup is unlikely to be screened in UHD by the Beeb.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
It's pretty annoying, though, Den. Other countries can do it, why not us?

Not sure anyone besides Germany and Switzerland will be broadcasting it in UHD.
Comment from a Beeb blog from last month says it’s not going to be easy.

However, making the move from on-demand UHD programmes to live UHD footage presents significant engineering challenges for our teams. High quality real-time HEVC encoding of UHD is still in its infancy, and is much more demanding for live programmes than for on-demand. That means we need to use higher distribution bitrates, and that people’s TVs will need to work harder to show the best picture.
We’re always looking to provide our audiences with the best possible viewing experience, and live UHD could be the next step in that journey. We’re now looking at the results from this latest experiment to help us build our understanding for how we might be able to provide live events in UHD in the future.

He also provided an update in the comments
Quote:
There are trials like Blue Planet II where we want to make them available to as many people as possible to watch. But as we’re still building and testing a chain capable of producing and delivering live programmes in UHD on BBC iPlayer, some tests will be more for the benefit of our engineering teams. We’ll make you aware of larger-scale trials in advance, where we can. For those interested, we have now made a live-encoded short loop of highlights from a fifth round FA Cup match between Southampton and West Bromwich Albion available to view in UHD HDR on BBC iPlayer Beta on compatible connected TVs.’
|
And I’ve just had a chat with an friend who works at the Beeb (in the technology space), and he said they are planning (but subject to change) to stream the 4K to Sky and iPlayer.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Well, at least viewers will be able to see the UEFA Champions League in UHD on YouTube.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
It is being reported in another forum that at least one, and possibly three UHD channels are currently being tested on VM.
Could be some good news coming soon.

What are those UHD channels as at the moment I'm struggling to think of any permanent UHD channel worth having. I'm currently being subjected to the Royal Wedding in UHD.

The only one I can realistically think of would be Eurosport UHD

Had a quick look on the Iplayer Beta and I can't find any UHD coverage hidden away for the FA Cup final

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
I guess you looked too early - I checked at half time and got a prompt to watch UHD live.
This was on my Panansonic tv with the beta iPlayer.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
I found the picture quality on the BT Sport Europa Final YouTube 4K feed terrible.
