British police were forced to defend sending visibly armed officers to guard a Christmas market after anti-gun members of the public and activists caused a social media backlash.

Pictures of the firearms officers posing with children at the market, posted on Northumbria Police’s Facebook page on the 9th of December, attracted more than 2,500 mostly critical comments.

Just a week before, on the 22nd of November, the U.S. government warned its citizens in Europe it had “credible information” Islamic State and al-Qaeda were planning to attack Christmas celebrations in Europe this year.

Despite this, offended users of social media claimed “militarised” police made the situation “worse” and were an “over-reaction”.

I would say in the UK most left-wing people, especially the further you move from the center, aren't liberal. For example for Labour party certainly aren't liberals.

German police are searching for a Tunisian over Monday's Berlin Christmas market attack, media reports say.
According to a temporary-stay permit found in the cab of the lorry that ploughed into crowds, the man, named as Anis A, was born in 1992 in the city of Tataouine, the reports say.

That'll be the EU's effective border controls in action once again.

In a different world these sort of arrangements between states would be perfect but we don't live in one and quite frankly the EU's obsession with free movement etc. is a criminal/terrorist's charter.

I wonder if anyone in Berlin has yet worked out the threat posed to Germany and the EU from the large number of very angry young men, in particular, whose claims for asylum have or are going to be rejected or whose lives in the west turn out to be very much harsher than they expected. That's aside from those who've come to the west already radicalised and just waiting for the chance to cause murder and mayhem. Are these people just going to head off quietly back home when the times comes or are they going to resort to crime or exact retribution in one way or another? Desperate people do desperate things after all but maybe the likes of Merkel don't know what real desperation is.

Berlin’s Left-Wing Coalition Govt Refused to Acknowledge Islamist Terror Just Two Weeks Before the Christmas Market Truck Attack

The ruling parties announced plans to tackle extremism in the German capital as part of their “coalition agreement” signed on December 4th, but have only highlighted right-wing activity, calling Islamic radicalism “international terrorism” and ignoring left-wing extremism entirely reports Die Welt.
The agreement makes it clear that fighting extremism is “high priority” for the new Berlin government but the document makes it very clear the only real danger to Berliners are right-wing extremists. The 250-page document does not mention the term “left-wing extremists” or “Islamist terrorism” once, though “right-wing terrorist violence” is mentioned many times.

A sub-chapter of the document is dedicated to combating “right-wing extremism, racism, anti-Semitism” despite the fact that many of the most anti-Semitic incidents in the city, like the Hezbollah supported al-Quds day march every summer, is led by left-wing supporters.
