Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

Hi all... I was wondering if anyone has used the Sky Q service alongside Virgin 200M Internet and Superhub 3 and if you have any experience/tips/hints to share? I am considering changing my TV service from VM TiVo to Sky Q. I was talking to a friend yesterday who has installed Sky Q with a different internet provider (also fibre). He said that it should work fine with Sky Q and a secondary internet provider. What I didn't realise is that you also need a Sky provided "Hub" to connect the Sky Q box and any Sky Mini boxes that you might have. Stupidly, I thought the Sky Q box would "talk" to the Sky Mini box through the Wi Fi network, which I thought would be great as my VM Superhub 3 is outstanding and gives me excellent speed and connection all through the house... even out to the end of the garden.

It seems this isn't the case. As I understand it, Superhub>Sky Q>Sky Hub>Sky Q Mini. I may have got this wrong though...

Is there anyway to avoid using the Hub as I have heard the signal strength isn't that strong from the Sky Hub and I'd like to avoid using boosters.

Many thanks in advance...

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

No the Sky Q and mini will connect over wifi.

The only thing that won't happen if you use a different Internet provider is the Q boxes won't act as wifi repeaters nor will the built in powerline feature work.

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

i have SkyQ and miniQ and vivid 200meg but I have the SH2

I have no problem with wifi connections but as Stephen said the mini Q does not act as a wifi extender. I have no sky hub as you only get this if you take sky broadband.

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

Excellent.... thanks both. I'm not worried about the wifi repeater/powerline piece as my Superhub gives me excellent coverage all throughout the house so no need for them... many thanks for the info!

might be worth pointing out that Sky have just introduced Sky fibre max with speeds up to 76 Mb

Only years after most other fibre providers.

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

Unfortunately, no Sky Fibre in my street! Which is odd as I can get 200 VM and 350 BT.

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

Well VM is on their own network and perhaps Sky don't have any access in the local cabinet.

Over 300mb with BT that's clearly FTTP rather than BT's fibre to the cabinet.

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

If you can get 300Mb off BT then surely you can get normal FTTC?

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

Not necessarily. Might be a new estate that only has the infrastructure for FTTP in place. Doubt they would bother installing cabinets to provide a worse service in an area.

Re: Sky Q and Virgin 200M Internet

There is pretty much nowhere that has both FTTC and FTTP from BT. If you've spent all the money on getting fibre directly into houses no point in spending some more to build cabinets to deliver a maximum of 1/4th the performance.

I've seen some areas with both.
