I support strikes that make passengers safer
http://www.itv.com/news/london/2016-...ys-of-strikes/
Passengers will suffer strike action next week by Southern Trains. But l fully support any strike, that makes it safer for passengers to travel on tubes or Main line trains.
When passengers travel at any time of the day or night. There must be extra staff on trains, and at stations.
I was at a Main Line station recently. And there was NO ONE on duty, yet passengers on the platforms.
What happens if someone is taken ill, or is attacked. You cannot always rely on CCTV, as it takes approx. 30 minutes to be called or you have to depend on public support.
Govia, who run the service, are in danger of losing the licence. Due to constant problems on there network
Having an extra person on the train is paramount.

Arthur, should we have an extra person on a bus, in case someone becomes ill?

re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
This has got bog all to do with safety and everything to do with trade unions trying to preserve jobs for their members - which is understandable as that's what they're there for, but I'd prefer them to be honest about it.
The RMT are agitating in Scotland over this at the moment too, claiming that there has to be a second person on board to operate the doors. They hate driver only trains, and claim they're not safe, even though a huge number of Glasgow's suburban services have been run this way for years without any obvious carnage.

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
Hugh, when l was growing up we had a Driver, and a conductor. Yes, things change. But crime dosn't
And Chris. I believe strongly that we need EXTRA staff n Trains. And at stations
Put it this way, I am now 64 now. And l get concerned even when l go on a bus or a tube. If someone gets close to me. And l have worked for the police for the past 30 years, and know to handle myself. But you cannot tackle more than two people can you
The public need that extra security, on public Transport.
The biggest trouble is that Rail, Tube and Bus companies want to save money. And please don't give me that rubbish. That staff will get jobs within the service.
They will probably get redundancy, that we wont hear about

Sure, if you dont mind your fares going up to cover all the extra costs, lets go for it.
Btw, Why is everytime you post you have worked for someone different, you seem to change job every other week ??

I work with vulnerable people each day of my working life.
Those are more important to than money.
I get fed up with companies that want to save money, at the expense of the travelling public.

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
Is anyone actually going to notice Southern being on strike given their recent performance?

Silly question I know, but did you actually read the link you gave?
Quote:
Govia Thameslink say the role of the conductor needs to change to modernise their service which will improve punctuality and customer service. They say the changes will not lead to any staff losing their jobs and will not affect safety on the trains:
|
No job losses involved, ie just as many staff will be on the trains. If anything, the proposed changes would help passengers, as the conductors would have one less thing to do. They could carry on dealing with a passenger issue, and not get diverted by having to deal with closing the doors.
Quote:
The Rail Delivery Group, which aims to improve the rail network, says the changes to the conductors' role, which will mean drivers operating train doors instead, are needed: We already know that drivers operating the doors on trains is a safe way of working. At the heart of this dispute are changes that would mean a better on board service for passengers and less disruption when problems affect the railway. In the interests of passengers, it's time to implement these changes and end this dispute.

They're employing just as many people, so how is it saving money?

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
I think folks are forgetting that the OP enjoys having higher prices/taxes and/or getting less in welfare/benefits etc. so he has something else to moan about. Must be real fun round his gaff...
As usual, this is just another excuse for strike action which has far more to do with exerting the union's power than passenger safety.

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
Well in Glasgow/Scotland Scotrail have been striking for weeks now over plans to allow drivers to close door on trains in place of a conductor.
It doesn't really bother me as I have a ticket and use the automatic gates at stations. However for disabled passengers who need the ramp then not having a staff member on the train who can deploy this may be a worry.
There is CCTV and of course the driver is still there.

As well as the conductor, where there is one present at the moment.
Quote:
A spokeswoman for ScotRail said: "This ballot result confirms that there is very little appetite for strike action in ScotRail. Nearly half of our total number of conductors voted against strike action or abstained.
"This is now a clear signal for the RMT that our people in Scotland want to decide their own way forward. We have already guaranteed job security, pay and the futures of our conductors.

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
As far as l am concerned, the MORE safety precedures you have on Public Transport, the better.
To me. You need guards on Trains, and conductrs on buses.
We have companies saying that we have to go forward. We have had trains stuck in Tunnels, we have incidents on Buses. That needs that 'extra' but of help.
I cannot see the whole problem here. At several railway stations, we have no one during the day or night.
That extra cover is needed in my view

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
Well the emergency services are always a call away.
What difference does a conductor on a bus or train make if there is an accident? The driver is still there and most passengers are sensible when things happen and will help out.

Re: I support strikes that make passengers safer
Quote:
The operator of the Southern rail network has offered conductors a lump sum of £2,000 in a bid to bring industrial action to an end.
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has set the RMT union a deadline of midday on Thursday to agree to end strikes.
It said conductors would also be asked to sign up to new on-board roles as part of an eight-point offer.
<snip>
GTR said it has set out "a fair, clear and unambiguous" plan of action to the RMT to settle the 10-month dispute.
In a letter to Mick Cash, the RMT's general secretary, it issued Thursday's deadline to agree to the deal and call off all planned strikes, with conductors then being balloted on the full offer.
The company said if the terms were not agreed by Thursday, guards would be served notice letters terminating their existing contracts and inviting them to sign up to the new on-board supervisor roles.
